Didn't they show images of stampings with that rear casting in the CT BIW last month? They could have been making CT stampings for quite some time if they wanted to. They have all of the stamping equipment and have for a long time.

Maybe they are getting the new stamping line up and running, one that will be a CT dedicated stamping line.

What would be much more interesting, for me, will be seeing sample CT front and rear end gigacasts or CT exoskeletons. We should start seeing the former in a month or so, but we don't know what is going on with the latter. I wonder if maybe those huge blue-wrapped things at the SE end of the GigaAustin stamping factory are related to the CT exoskeleton manufacturing effort. I can hardly wait to see them slowly disappear as that will be a big sign of change.

Note stamping and casting are not the same thing. Casting is done under pressure using hot molten aluminum that gets injected into a cast form to create a shape (IRDA GIgacasting machine).

Stamping on the other hand is done by using a flat piece of sheet metal and press forming it into a structural shape, like the cabin frame on a M3/MY.

Sorry wasn't intentional.

Technically, stamping is also done under pressure. Without any pressure, no marks are made.

-Crissa
Yes but either using a press (as I mentioned) or hydroforming. It's not molten metal that is pressed though. ;)

Yes, but you don't need pressure to move molten metal. Gravity's got ya.

-Crissa
In the case of the Gigaress it's 9000 tons of pressure to inject the mold with molten aluminium fast enough to get those large giga castings. In this case gravity won't do it.

Oh the pressure! How to contribute to the conversation without causing offense, technical mistakes, or general mayhem!!
