In BC we require 2 mirrors. One driver's side and one rear view or 2 on the outside.

If anybody is interested here is the code for BC:

Mirrors
7.04
(1) Subject to subsections (3) and (4), every motor vehicle shall be equipped with an inside mirror that provides the driver with an undistorted reflected view of the highway directly to the rear of the vehicle extending to the horizon from a point on the road surface not more than 61 m behind the vehicle.

(2) In addition to the requirements of subsections (1) and (3), every motor vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1973 shall be equipped with an outside mirror on the driver's side that provides the driver with an undistorted reflected view of the adjacent lane of the highway rearward to the horizon from a point on the road surface 11 m behind the driver.

(3) Where the inside mirror of a motor vehicle does not provide the view required by subsection (1), the vehicle shall be equipped with a second outside mirror on the side of the vehicle opposite the driver and in that case the inside mirror may be removed.

(4) Where a trailer or semitrailer in a combination of vehicles diminishes the driver's reflected rear view through the rear view mirrors required by subsections (1) to (3), the towing vehicle in the combination of vehicles shall be equipped with 2 mirrors, one affixed to each side of the motor vehicle, and each to provide the driver with an undistorted reflected view of the adjacent lane of the highway from a point on the road surface 11 m behind the driver to a point on the road surface 61 m from the rear of the combination of vehicles.

Here are the laws from all 50 states compiled on the Jeep Reddit:
Side mirror laws

My question is, what is the legality of the rearview mirror being a screen and not a physical mirror (as the prototype had)?

I don't know of any that forbid that; there are several cars in production with video rearview mirrors.

In Indiana, your vision may require 1 or more mirrors and even limit you to daytime driving only.

But, if I am traveling out of state, will the cops care that I am not required to have mirrors in my home state?

These state by state standards for driving across the country for Jeeps, motorcycles, and now EVs is kind of crazy.

There are 30 people in the US who may have kept the mirror requirement change study alive. I am one of those 30.

On May 24, 2021, NHTSA published a second 60-day [comment period]. A summary of the comments received on the first 60-day notice and NHTSA's responses to those comments was provided in the second 60-day notice NHTSA published on May 24, 2021. NHTSA received comments from 1,891 entities, including 2 organizations on the second 60-day notice. 1887 individuals, and input from social media-based Tesla owners enthusiast community group. Organizations submitting comments included the Automotive Safety Council and Alliance for Automotive Innovation. There were 35 duplicate entries.

I was one of the individuals who commented. It's possible I was one of the few who commented appropriately. Most comments were of the "You should allow cameras" variety. Unfortunately, they were looking for specific comments stating something along the lines of "I believe that replacing mirrors with a camera and video system should be researched. I am in favor of the research."

It's a funding thing. They need requests for funding in order to put it on the schedule.

The site: Regulations.gov
The lowdown: The comment period has ended. IF they do the study, it will take 3 years before the regulation can be changed.

For those who want to make a difference in the future, read the rules.

Of the individuals who submitted comments, 30 indicated support for PRA clearance being given for this work. Another 81 commenters voiced support for the research. The remaining commenters' input contained opinions regarding whether CMS should be permitted under FMVSS No. 111 and did not address the specific points on which comments were actually requested.

Only 30 people did the right thing to keep this regulation change on track. 30. Well, 81 supported the research. I'm not sure this will be enough support for the NHTSA to actually pursue the study and thus the change and thus the possibility that you can drive around legally in the CT without external mirrors.

As a community of people who want change, we need to do better. I didn't do a good enough job trying to get people on board back when the comment period was active. I'll keep an eye on the legislation. I'll do better.

They are lying about the content of those letters.

Also, we have already studied this, they're dragging their feet and not meeting their legal mandate.
