Some recent articles have suggested the Cybertruck's exoskeleton will be difficult to achieve, in part due to the complexity of welding stainless steel.

Seems like the SpaceX engineers have devised new techniques with excellent results. Don't Tesla and SpaceX have something in common...?

Very cool! SpaceX seems to have figured out how to weld this hard SS with automated laser welding machines.
I saw when I was at the Hawthorne facility that they were stir welding the seams for each booster section. I was always fascinated by this process since seeing it in NASA Tec Briefs 20 years ago

You still have to polish stainless steel. It will still rust if you don’t maintain it.

Well, you want to keep it from salts and iron oxides, lest they crystalize past the nickel-chromium surface.

That's not exactly the same as polish.

Q

Not everyone lives on an island, sprayed by salt water.
I’ll take the Hawaiian salt spray anytime over the salt tossed onto the streets of the Chicago latitude. I never seen the extent of salt damage to a vehicle’s frame until I started watching YouTube.

DeLorean owners in northern climates with salted roads have rarely suffered damage to the stainless, but more often rotted the frame. Only the exterior is stainless, while the plain steel frame underneath will corrode away when the protective epoxy coating starts to crack.

😊I suppose that the chassis under the Cybertruck will be regular steel metal subject to rust from the salt.
