I don’t think they would call the tri motor “Plaid” if they had a quad motor in the wings.

Not sure what naming will look like on the Cybertruck. Maybe “Dual” and “Tri” might stick? Then they could pump out a Quad Plaid later.

This brings up one of those weird gray areas with 4WS. If you are on a single lane road and turning hard, you’d want the rear wheels to be neutral or pivot in line with the front wheels, not crab style like when you are passing someone or changing lanes on the highway.

@Bill906 was talking about this situation the other day.
I don’t believe they are actually calling the current model s and X plaids so much as they are calling out the powertrain & suspension changes like the F150 does with a Tremor add on.

That being said a 3 motor would still be a plaid and the 4 would be something new. Were I them I would call it the 4^4 as in 4 wheels x 4 wheel drive x 4 wheel steering x 4 motors.

that’s my understanding of 4WS.

at low speeds, rear wheels turn contra front

at speed, rear wheels turn marginally in same direction as front

A good article here about the main versions and historical steps toward modern 4WS (still pop enough for me to follow)

and the engineering explained guy on it in vid!

I doubt there will be a 3-motor variant. I'm predicting only two versions, a dual motor and a quad motor.

It is called the Model S/X Plaid. The drivetrain is called the Plaid drivetrain, but it’s not entirely clear what makes it “Plaid”. Maybe just the fact that it’s in their Plaid cars.

In the movie “Plaid” what happens beyond Ludicrous speed. I cannot imagine Tesla launching tri motor and calling it Plaid if there is something even faster in the wings. There is no SpaceBalls reference beyond Plaid.

Branding on the quad motor might simply be “Quad”. Regardless, if there is a quad in the wings still, I’m betting it’ll be mentioned on launch day.

This is what I meant by turning crab style when changing lanes, which is the problem. When changing lanes, you want to crab.

With a lane change, you are wanting to move sideways but retain forward momentum.

With a turn, you want to change the direction of the vehicle.

Usually if you are going 50+ MPH, you are wanting to change lanes or overtake another vehicle and crabbing is the right way to turn. If you are going at those speeds and want to actually turn the vehicle, that actually counters what you are trying to do.

.... Double plaid?

I still believe the first version will be a quad motor variant. Elon would not have mentioned it if they didn't have all the engineering done for a quad motor setup. You can't just say something like that, if they haven't thought everything thru to make quad motors work. Giga presses need to create motor mounts in it's castings for dual, tri, quad motors all in one go to be ultra efficient. One casting in front or back to be able to fit any of the motor configs.

I also think it's smart for Elon to be patient and steal the best ideas from all the competition to make the CT even better.

Lightening claim to fame - big Frunk opening
Hummer EV - crab walk
Rivian - 4 motors - Tank turn

CT - all above and also RWS

Very sad to see the top end model will be out of my price range. Hope the 90k model will be the quad motor version and tri motor version will be near 70k which will be thin lining of my wallet. I’ll be perfectly happy with a 60k dual motor version as long as it has 500 mile range.

Tesla can keep the rear wheel steering and rear screen for all I care.

I agree on the rr screen. Who needs that screen in the back anyway? Most kids will be on their phones, won't they.

#MeToo

Feeling a 3.5T Rivian take a corner at 55 with a posted limit of 25 was amazing.
The 4.5T HEV is comically fast in a straight line so its not like more than 3 motors will be needed for me to melt tires and laugh. imagine a 3.25T canyon carving wedge from the future going up the PCH in Big Sur, Tail of the Dragon or the Million Dollar Highway into Ouray, CO without a care about the size or as much fear of the laws of physics ?

What I really hope does not happen is that Tesla announces the 2 first with indication of a 3 motor “plaid” behind it. Ships that to me then drops a 4 motor. Resale in the 3 motor would be crushed IMO and I of course like a good sheep would buy the 4 anyway.

Baaaaaaaaa!

So if the rear wheels point counter at low speed, and tandem at high speed, then there is a speed in the middle where the rear wheels do not steer at all.

What a ripoff!
