Does anyone know what happened to the idea of heating the metal for the different colors?

Sounds like a "teslas quality sucks" nightmare waiting to happen.

Rather just wrap

Heating a cold-rolled steel to temperatures high enough to change the color will also change the strength characteristics, probably not for the better.

Exactly. Nice way to make your CT less safe, but look great! You are basically annealing your super strong cold rolled steel into a softer outer shell.

Didn't someone already put a chart on here showing the different color changes at different temps? With the fear of metal fatigue, I agree with avoiding this route and sticking to wraps.

I don't think the color treatment would reduce the strength of the steel in any meaningful matter. You'd have to do more than change the oxidization on the surface for that.

...And I was thinking about remarking on the title but I'll leave that to others.
