i didnt watch the video. but Apparently Monroe is supposed to be some wiz of lean manafacturing, but nearly everything he says is so completely basic and like DUH, its annoying.

Alot of the scientific process is confirming the basic and the obvious.

I think that may be true.

Also, he needs to plan for the long tail of retirement.

Seems like he wants to avoid business loans, imo. He even states he'd have to put the money up himself to do the teardown.

And obviously he's not stupid and sees that he could save a bunch by just selling high margin merch to help offset that cost. My issue is the way in which he communicates this. They really should try the patreon or Kickstarter method. Give people something back for their investment, not some stupid trinket. I'd probably pay a little bit for early access to the teardown or even a copy of the full report. I'm sure others would as well. But, who really cares. He's free to do whatever he wants and people are free to do whatever they want with their money. Personally, I won't give a dime.

You'll get the videos, of course. You could buy the reports, too, but they're even more than the 'little trinkets' which... Well, lots of people are inspired by them. How many YouTubers have collections of stuff on their wall? It's not at all unusual for people to collect mementos. As long as you have a place and time to enjoy them.

I have bought stickers from him before, and I support on Patreon. It gives him a boost and content I find useful. You could, too.

I'm not going to buy the other trinkets. The price point is too high; I have a budget for these sorts of things.

I think the issue is, Sandy tries to make the sale of items target a specific goal. They just need to open a merch shop and sell some trinkets. Don't make it about a specific vehicle or a call to action. Just sell the stuff, shout it out. People on YouTube aren't used to their money being used for something specific. But you sell em a hoodie and it's game on! xD

But I'm not mad at em for it, it's business. I could see some people thinking he's just milking his tesla audience. Have they sold trinkets for non-tesla teardowns? The 1.3 mil was gonna happen either way right? isn't that just their business model? What if they didn't have a youtube channel? lol

Gotta hustle though.

I remember when Munro cleared 100,000 subscribers. At that level they are making an income making videos on YouTube, not to mention how many views they get on videos. If Sandy wants to be honest then he should at least say what his average income will be for this truck. He knows how many views he gets when he posts a Cybertruck video so he should subtract that from how much he needs. He also sells pieces after he is done tearing Teslas down and he didn’t factor that in. I do not mind his plugs because I can ignore them but I would be ignorant, indeed, were I to believe that this is just about the up front costs. I say that Munro should make more Tesla videos and get the funding that way. Analyze the fender pix that were just posted, the acceleration videos, the cash test pix, the wraps we have seen, or any number of other posts that pull a lot of discussion here - I bet he would make money that way.

This is an interesting debate, on the one hand it's not anybodies responsibility to fund Munro and associates except for Munro and his associates .
On the other hand it isn't mandatory to buy a bottle opener, no one is forcing anyone to do it.
If people with extra discretionary income want a bottle opener that's their business.

For my part, I bought stickers from Munro and they didn't come in the mail (lost or forgotten in the scramble) so Corey sent me extra stickers to make up for it. I don't think they are looking to screw anybody over here, just provide value to the folks who value what they have to offer.
If you've seen Sandys office he doesn't seem immune to the allure of keeping cool knick knacks with sentimental or novelty value around himself.
Maybe he wants everyone else to get a kick out of it too, while paying his employees in the process.
Not everything has to be an evil conspiracy.
The rotor laminates were too expensive for me but some people bought them.
All of that went into the company coffers to pay the engineers and fund future projects, and nobody was bothered.
But if they specifically say what they would like the money for openly and honestly that makes it wrong? I don't get this line of thinking.

If they were a massive shop that churned out bulk products, asking the public to fund a production line would be pretty egregious, but this is a boutique shop doing niche work, which has a limited shelf life of profitability, I can't blame them for asking themselves what else they can do to keep the lights on.

I want to see the Cybertruck torn down, and explore every aspect of it's construction, engineering and design minutiae. Something I could never do on my own and which would normally be kept behind closed doors in the automotive world.
So Munro offers me the chance to see something I normally couldn't, for free.
That has tremendous value to me. If someone came up to me in the street and said...

"Hey kid, i've got insider info about the Cybertruck, written down in a detailed, intelligent, considered, concise report, down to the costing of every bolt and nut. It's $75."
I would take that deal in a heartbeat.
I wouldn't even need the novelty bottle opener thrown in as a bonus.
If the people with extra bottle opener money, or companies who pay for the official report, can subsidise the investigative work so that everyone else gets to see it, that's pretty great.

Then there is the whole YouTube element, "Community" being a "Member" or "Subscriber" or "Patron" or Tier One Plus Ultimate Mega Club Participant Gold Class...
It's a brave new world out there of different (man do I HATE this word) "Content Creators" with different business models trying to find the right balance between a symbiotic relationship and a parasitic one with their audience.
I can safely say I've gotten more from Munro than they've gotten from me.
So I'm not seeing them crossing a red line here.

Then again I don't want my cash funding some cruise missile they make for submarines or something. But I'm a tree hugging pacifist.

Either way no matter how you look at it, I don't remember Dante writing about the worst circle of hell being reserved for those who sell novelty bottle openers.
Which is good cause I kinda want one.

Munro's business is "engineering for hire". They do a teardown when a client pays them to.

Thanks to their YouTube channel, they now get messages every day begging them to tear down a Cybertruck. Their viewers are their "clients", and securing funding from them is practical. Give the people what they want!

Munro Live would need a LOT more subs to make enough revenue to cover the costs.

Previously I did float the idea of having a group of us fund a CT teardown. There are a number of practical problems to the idea that could partially be overcome if Munro handled the report access and payment details. But that would entail another business model change to how Sandy is running his business. This kind of change though doesn't seem to be in his wheel house. Corey is the one who pushed for the YT channel and got it running for us all to see. I don't know what the reason was for Corey leaving but would not be surprised if Corey and Sandy had differing views on how to move the company forward.

All that to say, Munro and Associates is at a crossroads. It is their business and they will have to be the ones to decide what efforts they think are most worthy to take action on. As members of the public, it is our responsibility to exchange our hard earned cash for the output of those efforts that most serve our own interests. If Munro's efforts serve enough of us in a positive enough way, they will be able to make this transition and move forward successfully. If some other companies step up to buy reports like they have previously on other vehicles, Munro might not have to make immediate changes. If neither situation happens, there will be a future risk to the existence of Munro as a company.

It just is what it is. We have a voice and can vote with our dollars. Or not as that is still using our voice just in a less than positive way for Munro.

No one held a gun to your head and made you watch the video. I don’t understand the cry to help fund something. None of this makes any sense to me.

Look, if you like his videos, go to Patreon. If you like his merch, buy some. Otherwise, don’t watch his videos and/or don’t buy his merch. Sounds very simple to me.

if it’s true that no manufacturer wants to pay for a CT tear down report (which as I remember it costs ~6 figures), then I suppose if fans want to pay for it…

on the other hand, if fans pay for the CT then later a manufacture (or 10) come along and pay for the CT report… he paying fans back?

my problem with the video is Munro seems to give almost none of this context, leaving some viewers prone to think he’s a common content creator who has no incentive to do this CT tear down unless he’s floated by YT viewers
