How many are buying CT that DONT actually NEED a truck?

I haven’t owned a pickup in 25 years. I drive SUVs and tow a boat and a small trailer on occasion. I do not need a pickup for work, but I do need a car with a lot of cargo space and occasional towing ability, and I have to carry construction materials, tools, and appliances on occasion and what other kind of vehicle is best suited for that? I agree with @ajdelange that the key word here is “need”.

it isn't really a truck. It has a "vault" not a bed. It is a Posh Utility Vehicle.

I'm hoping to use the CT to replace my ICE truck and my daily driver. I currently only use my truck for hauling things from Lowe's, picking up mulch from our local landscaping area, taking things to the dump, and for driving around when the snow piles up -- so not a ton of usage over the course of a year. I don't "need" a Cybertruck since we already have 3 vehicles, but I want to switch to 100% electric eventually for environmental reasons.

I've also considered getting a Model Y with a tow hitch.

I drive a perfectly good Honda Accord LX which has less than 110,000 miles on it. Everything works on it but I have been a Tesla Superfan, scientist kind of guy. I love technology and I want to enjoy life for the years I have left and this vehicle will fill the bill. This vehicle will make my camping much more enjoyable and as an astronomy geek help me with all my gear! AND AS ELON SAYS:" It's Bad ass and supercool!"

I don't actually need a truck. I will definitely use the CT's pickup capabilities occasionally instead of borrowing a friend's truck. What I need is a big SUV that can seat 6. And the CT can check those boxes too.

I have to admit to thinking same. I sold my 20 year old Dodge Ram to help pay for the Model 3... my reasoning was that I could rent a truck when I need to haul stuff from Home Depot. That turns out to have been a PIA the first time I did it. If only our local H-D had the truck rental option.

I am definitely missing having a truck for odd random things (need to haul the weed trimmer down the street to help a neighbor, etc - not so easy in the 3.

I was as the service center this week and got to check out a model Y for the first time. I have to say, it would definitely be a feasible alternative with a trailer hitch (I have a nice trailer). It's also a WHOLE lot easier to get into and out of!

But there is one use case that ONLY CT will handle for me.... and it's my #1 pet peeve...... DOOR DINGS. Or any other paint/body damage. I'm sorry, but a majority of people are idiot drivers. Put them in a parking lot and it gets worse.

My wife and I are retired and we are purchasing the cybertruck for totally different reasons. My wife is handicapped and needs a motorized wheelchair that weighs about 50 pounds. Having to lift that weight into the back of a car trunk is difficult. The cybertruck is perfect. Also as we age driving will be difficult and the cybertruck will be the solution two are driving problem with the upcoming autonomous driving.. Tesla has proved to be the vehicle of choice for us. My question is will Tesla start production on the cybertruck earlier than 2021.

I too see it as a retirement vehicle for a myriad of reasons. Unfortunately, production towards the end of 2021 is iffy but there is hope that they will be able to exceed traditional (historic) production goals in the following years.

I'm optimistic that lessons learned on Model 3 and Y, plus experience with building other Giga's (have you seen Berlin????) and simplicity of the CT will make it less likely to be late.

Same situation for me. I’ve tried to get along without one since getting the model 3. Harder than I thought.

I've been hanging on with a trailer that I use periodically. Not very often because it is a pain to pull it out and use it. But as a result there are a number of things that have beep pushed to the back burner too. They are waiting on my having a viable load carrying system like a pickup.

I have a 4 door Jeep Wrangler and since no legacy automakers seems serious about a similar EV option, I'll get the CT. I don't necessarily need the cargo space but when I do, it's nice to have it available.

I don't need a truck. I want a truck. I always just borrowed someone's before, but none of my current friends have one, and my dad's was well... Finally sold last year (as was our golf cart).

I don't need a truck... I can put building materials on my Mazda or get them delivered. I could maybe get a trailer or a the new Mazda CX3 and have basically the same as I do now, but actually not scraping the ground when I go off the pavement.

But I ride a motorcycle now. I want something to carry it, and I have limited parking space. A truck that's electric solves my fuel problem I'm having with my Mazda (I run it so infrequently now that I'm barely using the fuel or charging the battery). I want to be able to carry building materials myself, so I can scope out neat recycled bits or stage only just enough rock or material instead of buying a years' worth and letting it sit. I have lots of uses for a truck.

And I want an EV for my next vehicle. Gas is out. I've always gotten the most efficient I could with my money (well, except the Nova, but it was efficient in other ways). And even a Cybertruck will be more efficient than anything powered by gas.

So no, I don't need a truck. I want a truck. And if I'm going to get a truck, it better be electric. And it better be able to DC fast charge so I can travel. And it need to be under $50k.

That the Cybertruck looks like my dream car from when I was 7 is just icing on the cake.

Need, mostly no. As A. J. said, it’s like a gun. When you need it you really need it. For me it is a 3-4 times/year need. And I don’t really want a pick up truck. Not a normal pick up truck, anyway. THIS. This brutal, simplistic yet complex beast is a true sport-utility vehicle. This is what I have been dreaming about. Had Cybertruck not come along I would have bought a 3 or Y someday when my reliable car died. If Elon had presented just another pick up I would have said, “Nice. Good for them,” and gone about my business. Rivian bores me. There is nothing boring about THIS.

I just did some quick adding in my head for the number of days a year I use my truck as a truck. Where I need it for hauling, towing, or ground clearance (I currently have a 2" lift and 35s on my F150 which I had added a while back because I was bottoming out on some of the roads I hunt).

Its' about 50-60 days per year. So about 13% - 17% of the time. Totally worth it!!
