I kinda of find these comparisons pointless.

You can go online today and order a Rivian R1T (or a Ford Lightning)
You can go online today and put your name if for a Cybertruck, and you will have to wait at least 3 years go get one.
Obviously, there are a fair number of people who already have a CT pre-order, and will over the next few months and two years be put to the question of whether to wait for that order configuration email at all, much less whether to order, or which configuration to order.

Like you said, they could today buy a Rivian or Lightning (etc).

True, there are a number of people that have a CT reservation. But there is a whole larger universe that hasn't seen a Cybertruck spy photo or YouTube video.

When they do see one, and if they are inspired to get one, they are years away from taking delivery. Elon would hope they get one of the other ones because that helps the transition to electric vehicles.

Note. I had a Tesla, now have a Ford Lightning, and will be getting the 340 mile range Cybertruck. If the Cybertruck is a better experience than my Lightning (which I really enjoy driving and using) I expect I will be in car nirvana.
