Interesting idea. Unfortunately it looks at this time that it will be installed at the service center. Also it weighs about 500-600 lbs, and would likely have coolant connections.

When I first saw the range extender I thought it would be a Tesla power wall compatible kind of thing that you could use in a variety of applications, it looks like it needs to be installed and removed at a service center though.

Unless you're the Hulk, you're not popping in/out the range extender battery pack.

But then again if you're the Hulk you can just jump anywhere and carry anything so probably don't need a Cybertruck unless you just want to show up Tony Stark in his pretentious Audi's.

Tesla has said next to nothing about it since the delivery event. They did say that it would be for people that need more range for towing, back country, etc., and that made people think/hope it might be removable since most people spend only limited time towing and in the back country. We can hope, but personally I am not putting a ‘lot’ of my hopium stash into it.

At only 500 to 600 pounds I do have a engine hoist that can lift up to 3,000 pounds so that means I own the halk that can lift it out but the cooling lines I'm not sure about but the are quick connections fitting that can hols a couple of thousand pounds of pressure so there is a way

yea, range extender would ONLY make sense if it was something i could install and uninstall myself when i needed it. Like it had arms that could support the weight, and you jack it up and back under it then let it down in the bed of the truck and connect the cables and coolant lines and off you go kinda thing. i would never want that thing permanently in the bed of my truck.

That is my view and with it sitting in the garage one must put it to use as a battery back up or power wall/truck battery

Why would they? It's not due until later this year. Don't expect to hear anything until much later this year.

I suspect that the HV lines, let alone the coolant and telemetry/control lines might be beyond what most people would want to mess with. There also needs to be solid bed mounts because we don’t need it sliding around.

Yeah, it never made much sense to me.

I could be wrong, but I suspect it's just a placeholder for battery improvements in the pipeline. When Tesla has a battery that has an EPA range over 420 or 450 miles, I bet they say the extender no longer makes sense.

I wasn’t saying that they would or should; only that they haven’t. As a result, and as per always, we run amok with our own wishes, needs, and predictions.
