Looking to see how your Cybertrucks are being registered in various states. Mine in CA was registered as “commercial” as opposed to “automobile”. First wanted to see if that is universal for CA and then for other states. For commercial vehicles CA collects more fees. This state!

all pick trucks with a bed in California are commercial. You will see automobile have 4 letters in plate config and commercial and pickups have 1 letter

In mid 2000's I added a camper shell to my last pickup, went to CA DMV to have the weight tax removed by reclassifying as RV, saved $400+ per year, would probably be more now. All we need is someone to make a camper shell for CT. There is a caveat you're not supposed to haul anything, but you can still tow, and no cop is out checking if the RV plated pickup has stuff in the back. Now out here in TN they just don't care, reg is dirt cheap (how it should be).

A shell for the CT is one of the most needed addons, not just for the reason you mentioned but to keep the vault dry when it rains.
Hopefully they come out with one soon and that helps take a little of the registration sting out of it.

DMV site is confusing.

“Commercial vehicles that are designed, used, or maintained primarily to transport property or people for hire, compensation, or profit must be registered.” NOT.

Commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or combined gross vehicle weight (CGW) of 10,001 lbs. or more, along with most trailers, need to be registered as commercial vehicles. NOT

Depending on the use, commercial motor vehicles can include:
  • Pickups: A “commercially used” motor truck with a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 11,500 lbs., an unladen weight of less than 8,001 lbs., and equipped with an open box-type bed less than nine ft. in length. NOT because it is not commercially used.
  • Multipurpose vehicles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, and station wagons can be registered as passenger or commercial vehicles, depending on their use. OK
  • Exclusions
For registration purposes, these vehicles aren’t considered commercial vehicles:
    • Passenger vehicles: Not used to transport people for hire, compensation, or profit. BINGO

Why are registrations automatically getting assigned commercial and need to figure out process to veneer

If you are a Veteran with service connected disabilities in CA, you may now be eligible for "disabled veteran" plates, even if you are not 100% VA disabled (as of 2023). If you have DV plates you are not charged any registration/renewal/licensing fees.

Calif dmv is a joke. I'm waiting on a refund since they don't let me renew my sprinter online, I paid by check. It took them.3 weeks to deposit it. Worried they didn't receive my check , I went the dmv and they said it's not in the system yet..so I paid by CC plus 2%. So now they cashed my check and it's up to me to send in proof that I double paid. They know I double paid. Yet I need to provide the proof to get my $580.00 refund.

You can register the vehicle as an RV, but if you get caught hauling anything ,usually by the chp, you will get a huge fine plus penalties. You have a 100k 120k truck. $300 extra a year isn't going to break you.

I agree the commercial tag isn’t really fair. I have never been paid to haul anything in my F150 and never will. I have transported plants, wood, grapes, furniture, golf clubs, etc, for myself but nothing was a “commercial” operation. I like the idea where the bed is covered, making it an SUV. All CTs come with a covered bed, built in. One step closer to an SUV.

How about the insurance? Do you need to buy commercial auto insurance or just normal insurance?

Was $1286 for me.

Also I've heard that not only is it more, but it is based on original purchase price not current value so it doesn't reduce over the years. Can anyone confirm? And if so does that mean the VLF isn't tax deductible like other vehicles?
