I'd envisioned mounting on the roof rack, but this is much easier and thief/vandal proof. No lack of room on the dash, lol.

Great for having connectivity at a campsite, and then bringing it with as you explore remote locations.
The fixed mounting will not be ideally placed to connect to satellites, but with more up there and my specific use case, with a bit of compromise (move the truck) I think it may work well enough.

No doubt someone will come up with alternative mount options soon enough.

I'm actually surprised it works through glass at all, I'd imagine the glass would attenuate the signal a bit, so data rates would be slower, and more susceptible to interference, especially whilst driving. Dashboard heat mightvbe another issue, but hey at least its an option, and its fairly safe inside.

i guess that's the point? To get internet connectivity (and fast one too) when one wanders into no-cell zones

I get how this would be useful in remote areas, away from cellular service, but I've never had a problem streaming HD movies on Netflix anywhere there was reasonable 4G LTE service, using just the hardware that comes with the Tesla and our free Premium connectivity we have in two of our Tesla, the third one requires a $10/month subscription. Starlink costs over $100/month, last time I checked.

Serious question……

If your going camping it’s to get away from all the daily life garbage, why do you need this?
For me - go camping and do camping things, then stay and work remote a few extra days! + Grandkids Entertainment after they run around all day = good to have chill time with a streaming movie + I can buy Cybertruck accessories when I'm chillin by the fire! :).

Get your point, but I like to have it and can always turn it off with a single swipe!

Also CO Camping = no cell signal in several areas and full internet > Sat Messenger

Starlink transmission links between the satellite and ground use the KA and KU frequency bands - roughly, police radar and radar detector frequencies. Radar detectors (and Starlink antennas) work through the windshield because glass that isn't metallic coated is transparent to those frequencies - no attenuation, no surprise...

There is a special (and, naturally, especially expensive), wide field of view antenna designed for moving vehicles.

Starlink antennas are designed to operate at 122 degrees F and the storage temp range is always higher, so no danger there. I'd be more worried about that antenna flying off the dash like a missile when the driver gets really frisky with the go-pedal....

Good point of view..

however I have considered this simply for GPS guarantee. Significantly reduces the chances of getting lost/stranded without a way to call for help.

phone/watch/Garmin work well. Man-Portable sattelite connect is icing on the cake
