Agreed! I think the more likely explanation is they want to keep the data flowing while they fine-tune the model. The data volume will greatly reduce once the free 30-day trial is over.
A free 30-day trial would be nice.

That's their original price and that's my preference where I can have it on months where we're on a long road trips.

I wonder if we Cybertruck owner can ask for reversal of our outright (no choice) purchase and go on the monthly scheme.

Make me want to pass my FS. Harder to justify the 20K extra now.
With Tesla you
Yeah, so that makes the current rental price merely equal to buying it outright.

You really think it'll stay that price for ten years?

That’s a big fat NOPE! Then the complaint will be….”Why are they charging so much? Remember when it was only $99 a month 5 years ago?”

I love driving my truck everyday regardless of FSD but I look forward to getting it when available. Probably won’t use it much because I love driving my truck.

We don't yet see the value of owning FSD outright.

I anticipate rental prices dropping even more to capture the maximum TAM, possibly reaching as low(total guess) as $20 per month with a projected uptake of >95%. Safety is a Tesla core objective.

Conversely, purchasing outright will likely be priced at a premium, qualifying for Robotaxi use.

Hypothetically, if the Robotaxi generates yearly $30,000 in profit, commercial Full Self-Driving (FSD) could in future be priced at $60,000+.

Okay, but then you're not getting FSD anymore and it's more capable so...

??‍♀

Interesting. I never noticed them use that before.
They haven't. This is new.

PS, I think Tesla's path on this isn't really right, but I can't argue that the stock guys want it to be a profit center.

I guess there was so much flack about calling it FSD they had to add supervised. It definitely needs supervision! Maybe since people were getting the wrong idea that they could just start FSD and it would drive them to Piggly Wiggly! Probably a good idea to back away from the full FSD name until it can actually do it.

Yeah, it would take ten years to get to $12,000. Wow.

I wonder if purchased FSD will go down now??
It won't take ten years to get to $12K because FSD rental is month to month. The price can and will go up. There is no chance that it will still be only $99/month for the life of the car.

On the otherhand, those who purchase FSD get all the future updates, even if it can actually be used as a robotaxi. Almost no one would pay $12K for what you get now, people who buy it now are buying the future product, without knowing when it will be able to drive without supervision.

It's a smart move for Tesla to transition to FSD being mostly a rental, because they can raise the price as it matures. This greatly increases future demand for a high-value, high-priced FSD because everyone and their brother won't already have it. If you pay $12K now, Tesla can never make you pay more for the life of the car.

This is probably just temporarily to get more sign-ups as beta testers. They need more data to train AI. It's not reasonable to keep giving out 1 month of free trials. As of now, no one should purchase FSD outright. $99/month is a better deal and protect you from the risk of losing FSD in an accident if you paid upfront.
I don't think that's the case because Tesla can collect all the data they need by running FSD in shadow mode, even on cars whose owners have not purchased or rented FSD.

It went from FSD Beta (meaning it requires supervision) to FSD Supervised (meaning essentially the same thing). But the product has improved greatly, that's probably why they don't want to call it "beta" anymore.

They may need actual running for regulatory numbers and their liability calculations.
