The sweet sound of an engine

I know that a lot of gear heads love the loud sounds of a tuned ICE. In one of the new member threads I also saw someone mention that:

I’ll miss the sound of a V8 though.​

Personally, I do like the sound but under normal circumstances I actually prefer the relative silence of BEVs.

I really like the idea of being able to drive into the neighborhood at night without waking up the neighborhood. Or to drive through the backwoods and not scare off the wildlife.

But there are even tail pipe modifications people fo to “enhance” the sound of their vehicles.

Are you going to miss the sound of your ICE vehicle? Are you excited by the silence of BEVs? Are you going to enhance your CT to add some sound?

A while back I was thinking it would be cool to have the sounds of horse hoofs on cobblestone that would go from walking to galloping as the speed of the vehicle changed.

And I remember EM making some comment about enhancing BEVs with some jazz music so that blind people would know you were coming.

Anyway, what do y’all want?

I've actually thought about this a lot...

I like the idea of having a quiet ride. I hate road noise when on the highway, the hum of it lulls me to sleep. I hope the tires are ride quiet smooth.

As for low speed noise, I question whether blind people really have a problem with hearing BEVs because they typically have better sound awareness. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is just FUD from ICE enthusiasts who might say something like "loud pipes save lives." I was a motorcycle rider for 2 years and the safest thing for me to do was not ride in a blind spot even though I had loud bike.

I must say, Ive always enjoyed the throaty growl of a muscle car or supercar. (Warning, initiating rant) Loud engine sound has long been acquainted with performance but now quiet BEV have better performance. And every teen with a part time job is modifying their exhaust to make it louder. BEV has just effortless performance. It's like going to the gym and easily benching 200 lbs then the guy next to you puts on 135lbs and grunts and hollers to push it up because thats "the macho thing" to do. I like the idea of quiet strength, the calm in the storm. Energy output transferred to the rubber on the road not excessive vibrations and other wasted energy.

The Cybertruck is going to be my stealth tank. No extra sound needed. Perhaps I'll allow some snake jazz if required by law. I like how it has a kind of steam engine sound to it. It would be cool to have the tempo match the speed of the car somewhat and then let out 'steam' when you come to a stop like in old timey cartoons. I definitely want the option to turn this off when off roading and in rural areas.

It does come from the blind community as well, but in every community there are those who have pretty much just time to complain.

BEVs do make noise, even at low speed, and their relative silence makes it easier to pick out important things. All that engine sound does is raise the surface noise which makes it harder to hear things near you.

I like the sound of a V8, too. But honestly, you don't often miss it. Especially after hours of listening to it. You get to hear it next to you all the time and really, you just think, 'ya, but mine still goes faster'.

I would love the option to pick a sound , custom sounds even.
None, Tesla mode , if your feeling stealthy.
V8, V10, hehe Tie-Fighter etc.

After a while, loud exhausts will seem like Maria Sharapova when she hits the ball, but your CT is 6 car lengths ahead after the light.

Back in the 80's, I knew a guy with an extremely loud Chevy pickup, but we knew it wasn't fast because we had watched it roar and crawl along slowly. My friend blew his doors off with a Ford Escort 4 cylinder. He was embarrassed!

Also I had several friends with loud pickups get tickets for "exhibition of acceleration" in high school. Without loud exhausts, the cops would have never given them a second look.

Imagine a Ford Escort getting a ticket for "exhibition of acceleration?" Not happening, LOL! Yet, it would easily beat more than a few of these.

Being able to tie a 2020 Corvette 0-60 at 2.9, and will probably improve even more, I won't need any EXTRA attention from the cops.

Loud exhausts will get officers' attention from 3 blocks away and make them head your way. Being quiet, they probably wouldn't look up from their smartphone or cruiser computers as you slip by.

Noise is inefficiency and it is annoying. Why would anyone want to annoy the people around them .. other people certainly do not want to hear you ‘roar’ .. beyond what is required for safety of course.

It is a good compromise of making the sound for those in the vehicle without blasting it out into the world. Well unless you have your Hummer infinity roof open (talk about compensating).

The only thing is it uses the radio to project the sound so you would only be hearing the sound. Not gonna hear your local public radio broadcast in the background (now who’s compensating).

But overall a great gift idea too. I may just have to get one of these. Wish they also had the whiny sound of a Japanese turbo K-car engine being thrashed at high speed.

I truly find it a pleasure to drive my wife's Model 3 where one can have a pleasant conversation inside the cabin. I love my 06 Toyota Tacoma Quad Cab BUT the noise and vibration are a contrast. I did almost get run over by a Toyota Prius the snuck up on me in a parking lot. I like the idea of horse hoofs at low speed!

I was just thinking about the low vs high speed. Instead of horse hoofs, it should be a Pegasus. That way, once a critical speed is achieved the Pegasus would take flight and the galloping sound would go away. And when slowing down the Pegasus would land and resume the galloping sound.

I’m spending way too much thought in this idea. Lol

I've always loved the deep rumble of a V8. I hate the whiny sound of high-revving engines. And I despise the sound of cherry-bomb mufflers. I live downtown and have found myself thinking of doing terrible things every time some douche speeds down the street outside in a pimped-out old civic with a loud muffler. Especially when my kids are sleeping. I am ready to fully embrace the silent future.
