That would be great if you could drag around a 5-10kw solar panel + inverter package. Prob take a whole day to fill up , but in theory you could sustain yourself like this almost indefinitely. Don’t need to fill up gas tanks . Almost 0 maintenance for the generator itself (obviously no spark plugs, air filter, moving parts). If you’re camping there is also no sound as well .
idk how far away we are , but I bet someone’s gonna come out with a portable solar array, just for this purpose. Something lightweight like an awning or umbrella you prop up over many square yards, and just plug in to charge.

I use the Champion 4500/3500 (model 201531) dual fuel gas / propane. I charge with the TT30 plug and get 7mph at 24A. It's very small, very light and relatively quiet even running at full bore.

May I be so lazy as to ask for a link? How much juice does that give you on 20 pounds of propane?

This is the one I road trip with. You’ll need the grounding plug everyone mentions. It’ll pump 3kw/H on propane into the truck. A 20gal can of propane will last about 15 hours. So 45 kWh. 120 miles of range depending on your speed. I like it because it’s light enough I can lift it into the vault myself. It has wheels and a handle. Dual Fuel. Remote/Push Button/Manual start options. Make sure you pack a few quarts of engine oil to replace it every 6 to 8 hours.

The link is a great price at Lowe’s

This is with the level two charger that comes with the truck? And also do you have any pictures of your setup and lastly …

Any chance you could post a link to your ground plug? Please and thank you.

Correct. I use the standard TESLA portable charger that you get from them. You’ll need a 30A head as the charger only comes with a 50A and a 15A.

The ground plug:

Sorry. No pictures. If I have time I can try and set it up. It works quite well. 3 Kw/H isn’t fast but that’s not the point. Other than testing it’s a backup. No different than when I used to carry 6 gallons of diesel on my Diesel Jeep Wrangler. That was an extra 120 miles of range that I never once needed to use.

remember fella's, just becaue your generator charges the truck does not mean the Sine-wave and Total harmonic distortion values are low enough to not be causing LONG TERM damage to your charging port in the truck itself. Its suggested to use a THD value lower than 5%

I know the Champion series generators are much higher possibly creating a slow ticking time bomb in your electrical charging system within the truck.

I like the Ecoflow delta pro 3 for this application. 2.6kw solar input, native 240v output and good integration with the multi-fuel smart generator. Lots of options.
The Anker f3600 and its newer plus version look promising for this too but I haven’t used either.
This thing from pecron sounds like it will be good but the solar input sounds a little
limited based on specs.

Fwiw, I live in Arizona and camp with very young kids. I carry an Ecoflow delta pro 3.
Two things I forgot to mention.
First, it can accept an ev charger input. This means you can top it off to full while you supercharge using the mobile charger and 240v bed outlet. I use a nacs adapter to do this. It fills up my “jerrycan” at the same
time as my main battery.
Before I paint a target on my back,, yes this does work while supercharging but not while level 2 chargjng.
The second is that if you have the Ecoflow 800w (better) or newer 500w alternator charger, it can manage a large battery for you that could potentially fit in the smugglers den or a couple wired together that could potentially fit under the rear window.
Here is an example:

If you have a rack with panels on it you could even set this up so the generator and slave battery are constantly being topped up by solar while driving and/or parked. It won’t be as much as you need to set up with portable panels once you get there but it will be something.
This is obviously not as handy as an integrated range extender but I think it would be useful if you camp remotely.

Had I been desperate for more money, I'll come up with gerry-can sized battery that would enough juice for 100-mile range.

With their advanced battery tech it will be made in Japan or China, and rebranded in India or Japan to escape the tariff. ?
