FYI

I needed to remove a crossbar to load the bed, and realized that I misplaced the keys.

Contacted Service Center through chat and was directed to call Customer Service.

Called Customer Service and after 45 min of being on and off hold, they confirmed the issue would need to be handled by the Service Center.

Service Center messaged me in the app (see attached image).

What a mess

In hopes that the keys are all identical, would anyone with crossbars be willing to get a copy made and send one to me?

I’ll pay for the help.

I didn't realize the OEM crossbars came with keys. I'm not a fan of physical keys for this reason.

Also, did you ever separate both keys from the ring and place one of them in a safe place; say, the glovebox for safe-keeping?

you could also try to pick it yourself lol:

Genius me didn’t separate them, and put them in a place that was safe and “memorable.”

One of the first things I do when I get new keys like that is to go to the hardware store and make duplicates. Then I stash one set with a pile of keys and update my key spreadsheet. How did you lose both sets of keys at once? I only ever use one on my crossbars.

Just watched video on how to remove the crossbar and new owner had no keys. He took protective cover/trim piece off by prying it off from the top (no tools required). Unscrew the wing nut and lift off the unit. If lock was activated, he just muscled the wing nut as it has a groove on bottom to engage a small piece of metal that protruded into groove, therefore "locking" it.

This may be long shot but worth trying...if the lock keys for the crossbars are similar to the ones you get with a Thule or Yakima rack, check amazon or other retailers. You may be able to find the same key pattern and can purchase it.

I encountered something similar with my irrigation lockbox (for the controller). It uses the same looking key as my Thule rack, so I searched and found replacements on Amazon. Think it cost me around $4, and it worked.

This is the key I bought. What heped was having the number on the key (CH751): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B27653Y?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2

The keys are not universal. I have two sets of OEM Tesla cross bars and the keys are different.

Regarding REM’s comment about keys - having keys is a main reason they are superior to all of the aftermarket versions. Tesla designed a system that allows super-easy removal of the crossbars using a key and latch - it takes seconds to do. All the other systems are bolted on - four bolts for each crossbar. It is a LOT of hassle, as well as potential scratch damage to remove all the aftermarket crossbars. The other major difference is the better look for the Tesla bars - the side of the supports follows the same angle as the side of teh truck - it looks natural and like a Tesla/Apple design exercise - all the others have mounts that are 90-degrees vertical - they look stuck onto the top of the truck - hideous once you notice it. But the real difference that matters is the easy-on, easy-off feature provided by having a key and not needing tools.

I understand the argument that Tesla does away with keys elsewhere, why not here? Because they aren’t electric/electronic and people steal stuff. So the choice is to bolt them on like the aftermarket guys do, and be stuck with having them on and in the way all the time, of have a key-based quick-release via physical key. How else would you suggest they do it? Yakima, Thule, and other manufacturers of generic aftermarket crossbars and rooftop devices like boxes and bike racks all use physical keys.

The answer is to label all your extra keys. My CT has keys for the crossbars, bike rack, kayak rack, trailer hitch, trailer box, etc. I put them in a ziplock bag in the center console. I use a p-touch label machine to make permanent labels for every key the day I get a new one. Problem solved. Technology doesn’t have answers for everything.

It'll be in a random winter coat pocket. 2 years later.

I bet it's a generic key. 3D print one from an example. Someone here could measure or use one of those clay duplicators.

Did you solve your problem? My crossbars are stamped with K13 and so are the keys. I could make you one.

Where do you see the numerical stamp?

I’ll check when I get home

Thanks!
