The challenge for the Cybertruck is that it currently is a single-use, low volume platform. If Tesla can come out with a few additional models (e.g. delivery van, Full-sized SUV) built on the same platform, it will have a much better chance of surviving.
As interesting and fascinating as the Cybertruck design is, it was probably a mistake to make something that so constrains their options for a wide model range. GM EV pickup is almost as limiting. Ford and RAM have a lot more flexibility with body and bed on ladder frames.

EV Credit is going away Sept 30 now that the bill has passed, this will likely bump CT and other EV sales as that $7,500 personal or business tax credit is a pretty big deal.

Silverado EV is built on the GM BT1 platform that underpins the sister GMC Sierra, Hummer pickup and Hummer SUV, and the (very awesome) Cadillac IQ. It will also be the platform for the 2026 Tahoe/Yukon and for the 2026 Suburban/Yukon XL if GM sticks to plans. This quarter GM sold just shy of 11,000 BT1 EVs.

And they lose money on all of them. A lot of money. Which is why they only make them in small numbers. If they ramped production higher they would have to sell them at lower prices and higher loss per vehicle to get rid of the higher volumes.

It's not just cybertruck, everyone misread the EV Pickup segment. My CT has been fantastic, and will likely buy another when the time comes, but I don't tow for a living, or pretend like I do online, so it works for me.

"Small numbers"? As of 2Q 2025, GM appears to be selling as many EV pickups as Tesla or Ford. Probably more, in fact. Their 2Q 2025 US sales:

3,056 Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup
1,524 GMC Sierra EV pickup
1,502 GMC Hummer EV pickup (estimated; GM sold 4,508 Hummer EVs; assume 1/3 were pickups)

6,082 total

For comparison, Ford reported 5,842 F-150 Lightning sales in the US in 2Q 2025. Tesla's US Cybertruck sales were probably around 5,000-5,500; we'll get a better number when Cox releases their quarterly EV report later this month.

Yeah they all highly overestimated how many buyers exist for EV trucks. It just isn't a good market segment for EVs. I also don't tow and I don't think about things I won't actually need in a vehicle when I buy it so it's great for me.

You've hit the nail on the head. Now that everyone that bought a Cybertruck for its novelty/statement has theirs, the truck has to appeal on its merits. There are going to be buyers for whom it fits and others for whom it doesn't. Other EV trucks will have a broader appeal because their format allows for greater variation and appeal to more buyers.

Hey, we even have the Slate "erector set" out there now.

Disagree. If an audience needs someone to spoon-feed them a commercial while they are watching their precious Andy Griffith episode, then they aren't the target audience anyway. Someone who isn't smart enough to seek out the best piece of tech on the road isn't going to see the value proposition anyway; much less the paradigm shift it takes to successfully operate and adapt to an EV.

Especially when the most common question I get is:

why can't they figure out if the power goes out they aren't getting any damn gasoline either. It's stupid IMHO to think you need a gas car to back up your EV if the power goes out. Am I missing something?

And don't forget all of the negative posts on social media about the truck as a reason they are not selling. I believe once that subsides, sales of the CT pick up will pick up.

Factors negatively affecting sales:
1. polarizing appearance
2. perception that if cost at least and more than $100,000.00
3. daily Barrage of negative social media
4. It is a bigger and more visible of a target to the haters Its been talked about plenty on this site

All of that can be overcome in time, and there are plenty of people that pay more for their gas pickups than the current CT price of $80,000,

No one is stopping Tesla from opening stores or service centers in Wyoming. If Tesla prefers to put their facilities in places like Palo Alto (2 stores, 1 service center) instead, it's purely their business decision.
There is 3x the population in Santa Clara County than all of Wyoming. Santa Cruz County to the south with half the population of Wyoming has zero stores and service centers consequently.

Their decisions seem pretty deliberate. Annoying, but internally consistent.

ok. ? we will see soon enough. Tesla energy is such a market sleeper that people flatout don't believe me lmao.

V3 megapacks are right around the corner, along with the Tesla semi to deliver them. Let's visit this conversation in a little while.
LOL, Tesla energy's business is just repackaging batteries that other companies manufacture at astronomical markups. How long do you really think that gravy train is going to last?

Those reasons are spot on. The second in particular may be enough for someone not even to look at it. I still meet people that think it’s $150,000. The initial hype of the launch and the whole celebrities get it first thing definitely seared into peoples heads.

I am seeing way more however over the past month or two. The more out there the more people will buy.

Also, Teslas commercial success doesn’t impact me. I get to enjoy the vehicle either way.
