That's sounds like a bad time.
I vaguely recall hearing from DeLorean owners that actually experienced a rollover, and were able to escape through doors. There was enough leverage from the door to lift the car slightly, allowing them to squeeze out. (You can't escape through the windows, which only open a few inches.)

Either way, it sure makes the concept of "use the manual latch" seem convenient by comparison!

Reading the defective design claims in the lawsuit is kind of silly.

"Battery cell chemistry used is hyper volatile and susceptible to thermal runaway"

Come on.... We gonna start suing gasoline powered car manufacturers too? Since they also use a hyper volatile chemistry that is prone to thermal runaway?
Gasoline is also quite flammable. Old timers recall when homes had 'Attached garages' because early adoption of gas powered cars was a fire concern.

Hence the garage was a separate structure from the house- in the early adoption of cars.

I think this should be a hint. Also should not be legal or prudent for any "news" corporation to publicly display Ai generated content on stories that are intended to be factual.

Everyone is entitled to be heard in court. Justice is never a waste of money.
The ultimate justice already happened. He drove drunk, he lost his life. Let's just be glad it wasn't an innocent person he took the life of.

I agree about the inside latch but what I'm also reading elsewhere is that he was passed out and they couldn't get to him from the outside (no manual from the exterior)... But I mean how hard is it to break the glass?? It's no different than when there's an accident and the door is jammed shut.
It's extremely hard to break the Cybertruck windows and laminated glass in general. Without proper tools, an untrained passerby may not be able to get an unresponsive driver out of the vehicle. It's not a problem unique to the Cybertruck, however.

It is not unreasonable for the vehicle when it detects a crash for the screen and audio to tell you how to exit the vehicle.

Of course once the lawyers add the boiler plate liability statements preamble - you would have bleed out and the fire will have burned itself out...

There’s an owner’s manual that tells you how to open the doors in case of loss of power. Not sure how they’ll win the inadequate training part.

I don't believe the lawsuit has merit. The drunkenness alone is probably sufficient for the defense.

That said, there are remediations that could improve safety:

  1. Post-crash announcements. Both screens should show the location of the manual latches, with animated arrows, and verbal instructions via the sound system.
  2. Pop open the doors. This one is tricky, since the current safety rules emphasize keeping the doors shut in a collision. But if the vehicle is at rest, and the pyro fuses blown, then the electronics have only moments remaining to take action.
  3. Roll down the windows. Or, lower them slightly.
  4. Of course, none of the above will work if the collision disabled the electronics, so...
  5. Have a "crash module" in each door, which would beep and flash a red light at the manual latches after a collision. They would need to be independently powered. This adds cost of course, but the unit price would be small for just a beepy/flashy light that only needs to work for 5 minutes.
I don't think any remediation is necessary - the existing latch, as others have stated, is actually more intuitive than the push-button. However, if you really want a fool-proof (and I do mean "fool" proof) solution, I think making the mechanical latch double-acting would be ideal. Pull up partially for the electronic release and harder/further to engage the mechanical release. Then the emergency release is the same as the normal release so noone will forget in a panic.

If the guy was that drunk then he shouldn't have been driving and was a threat to kill innocent people.
Absolutely, case closed.

Note: Would the driver had survived, would the driver have sued Tesla for the loss of his vehicle because the "Battery cell chemistry used is hyper volatile and susceptible to thermal runaway" ?

I think this story is fake because I don’t any matching article from ABC, NBC, or CBS.
Also, suing for 1 million is rather low for a family loss.

The manual door release should be more publicly known I guess!

a coworker of my wife came over to her desk the other day and showed her this same image and my wife (drives a model Y) goes "remember how you opened my car door 'wrong' the other day?' (her coworker used the manual release, not the button) ... yeah, our truck has that too. This is BS"

Baytown is in Texas. The story is real but the lawsuit is bogus. The toxicology report showed alcohol and cocaine. The crash happened at 2 am. It targets the Whisky Barn for over-serving (there might be something to that claim but people need to stop blaming others for their family members stupid mistakes). It also targets Tesla, claiming that the Cybertruck doors won't open without power (which is false). As far as I can tell, there is no evidence he even tried to get out (he was too wasted to stay on a straight road, probably passed out). Tesla will probably not pay a dime on this one but that doesn't stop the media from acting like the Cybertruck is dangerous when it's actually safer than the millions of legacy trucks on the road.
