This is incorrect. Steel Dynamics does not produce Tesla's stainless. It was a repeated guess that's unrelated; the steel comes from a producer in Alabama owned by https://www.outokumpu.com/en/locations/calvert

The SDI connection has polluted search results, but they have repeatedly said they do not supply Tesla or SpaceX the hardened steel; and neither SpaceX nor Tesla ever had the heated rollers to create the hardening. The labels we have seen do say Outokumpu.

As much as I love the SS exterior I am curious if using lower cost and lighter weight SMC composite panels (think C8 Corvette) would have resulted in a significant hike in battery range at a lower price point.

I assume you're talking about the truck, not the Diner?

IIRC someone calculated the weight of the stainless to be 200-300 lbs. There would be minimal gains to replacing it.
