So I just got my VIN assigned 5 days ago. I am still arranging the funds and insurance proof etc, and planned to get it done in a week. I popped into the local dealership in Utah just curious if one of the 15 cybertrucks on their lot was mine? He looked up the VIN and said my Cybertruck was waiting in a parking lot they had reserved off-site. And that I could take delivery in 2 days. I haven’t even paid yet. I said sure. And that I would do the funds tomorrow, and he scheduled my delivery time. No funds or anything signed. It just made me wonder if I got someone else’s rejected truck or something was off, because I assumed my VIN would be assigned and then after I paid, Tesla would ship it from Texas to Utah. I didn’t expect him to say I can get it from the other lot (unknown location) and have it delivered in a day or 2. Am I getting a second hand rejected truck?

No, same thing happened to me a month ago in vegas. Messaged in the app, lo and behold they said the truck was on site and I could pick it up in 3 days. What they told me was they were assigning VINs once they arrived to the service center recently, not from Texas.

I thought it might have been a rejected truck, but when I took delivery there were a quite a few trucks in the back lot, around 20-30. This was early May.

No no, you're way over thinking it.
Firstly, as the production is ramping quickly and the trucks are still in high demand, Tesla is attempting to get ahead of the delivery curve. I doubt anyone past VIN 3000 (just a wild guess, I really have no idea) got their VIN before the truck was constructed. The point is that VIN->delivery is expected to narrow nicely.
Second, the other lot is just a staging ground, overflow, or simply storage. All of the SCs have these. Their parking lots can't be allowed to be over filled with undelivered trucks without getting into trouble with the planning permit people. You'd be surprised at how many regulations exist just for owning a parking lot.
Lastly, they don't care about your funds until delivery day. If you fall through someone lucky will just get your VIN. My VIN was this way. "hey, VIN 12xxx just fell through, want that one instead and get it tomorrow?" That happened to me because, again, they're just trying to get them out to folks as smoothly as possible.

The same thing is happening up here in Wisconsin and Illinois. Same day VIN assignment, delivery day established for one week out. Small snafu due to original loan agreement which on the Tesla App said all is good to go, just found out it is just past 60 days so a new finance agreement needs to be signed but the deliver date was assigned none the less. Cheers

I love the way you are thinking… human nature . It’s not Fking small investment.. 100plusK is hell lot.
Here in Texas I have access to Tesla’s overflow lot, dealership is mile away from here, they have lot of space there but cannot keep all cars

Here is video as proof . This is backup lot

They come here everyday take 2-3 cars for delivery, wash them , prepare them and deliver.

That sounds like a conspiracy! Someone needs to watch this more closely!

Because they apply for license plates at local DMV , they want your paper work to be with them 1 day before they go to DMV, then 3rd day as back up

I know I hate it, you pay for 3 days while car/truck sits in their parking lot

That wasn't my experience. I didn't pay for the truck or the license/insurance until the day of delivery. It all started the day I took possession.

Same for me. I have VIN but won’t pay anything or have insured until pick up. Service center just wants a pic of your insurance added. Can being check when you pick up. Doesn’t delay deliver

No, I bought mine in Washington, a State that doesn't make it illegal for consumers to buy the vehicle they want, even if that vehicle is sold direct from the manufacturer.

You will need to take your beef up with your state legislators.

I'm located in Illinois, and received my VIN on 5/29 (119xx). I've completed the insurance and financing on the 30th, and I'm patiently (a lie) waiting for a delivery date. The MVPA shows the odometer at 21 miles. Is it safe to assume that Tesla performs some test driving prior to shipping, or should I be concerned that someone has been cruising around Chicago in my truck? ?

The day I took delivery it took 15 minutes at the most only because it took about 10 minutes to find my way to the help desk. as I walk into an unattended parking lot with 4 cybertrucks parked in file with alphabetically marked parking spots. I looked at the trucks wondered which one is mine. I had read somewhere that there would be a name tag on it with my name. I didn't see that but I remembered what the last digits of my vin are. I can see that there is one here with my number on it and its in spot marked with a D the one next to mine in C has a red carpet under it and mine and the others just have black carpet A and B were gone already and I was a little early, so C was still there. a set of stairs led up to an empty lobby with 2 doors. I walk in and think there's no one here I think I can use my phone to gain access and just drive away in it. I was already heading back out to the truck as my friend opens one of the doors and tells me it's in here come on. I walk into a quite mellow dimly lit space with a row of desks along the backwall and one desk in the center 2 people worked on their computers in the back and the young lady in the center says I can help you here. Ok lovely I'm here to pick up my cybertruck She asked for my Driver's License I give it to her it takes her about 30 seconds to verify it. And says Ok sir you're all set your truck is in the slot marked with a D ill open it from here just use your phone. Walked out to my truck and got in with my phone and drove away. it was fast and simple there were 2 keycards on the dash.

Tesla vehicles have always been custom ordered. I don’t remember reading about so much unsold CT inventory until recently. One member claims his local SC has nearly 100 CT’s in inventory.

I wonder if customers are having second thoughts and canceling orders and therefore forfeiting their deposits.
