I just received new plates and was surprised that they are C-truck plates (https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/vehicles/license_plate_guide/c_truck.html). These are intended for vehicles weighing 8,001-10,000 lbs. Not sure why IL Secretary of State thinks Cybertruck weighs over 8,001 lbs, but I do like the C for Cybertruck.

I was expecting an EL plate (https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/vehicles/license_plate_guide/electric_vehicle.html), or a B-truck.

For those in IL, I am curious what plate you received.

Same here. I got C Plates. I was like, cool C for Cybertruck :) until I researched plate types. Seems like we should have B plates. It also mentions something about towing capacity vs just truck weight, so maybe that is it.

Separate subject, but I can’t find an Illinois sub forum on here. Could be time to get a IL Cybertruck meetup going. What do you guys think?

I'm in. I received my Cybertruck May 4th and have 1400 miles on it already. I have towed my Zero motorcycle in the bed amongst many other things.

I just received my class C license plate.
Should we challenge this?
Curb Weight is 6600lbs
GVWR is 8800lbs (This is the manufacturer max weight allowed on it's 4 wheels including max cargo, not towing)

Here is my concern. They are charging me a $100 electric surcharge for each of my 2 electric motorcycles to compensate for not paying the gas tax. I tried to argue that i can't ride two motorcycles at once, and the motorcycles they replaced were getting 45mpg; they told me to go pound sand. I full well expect them to try to tack that $100 per year onto the cybertruck plus the almost $60 difference in class B truck vs Class C. I promise you, they will never lower it if they are making money.

Currently C registration is actually cheaper than EL and renewal rates are nearly the same. At least until they decide to tack the electric fee (does not seem to apply at present).

EL is $416 registration and $215 for renewal.
B-truck is $316+$100 for electric, and $151 for renewal
C-truck is $383 registration (no additional charge for electric) and $218 for renewal.

So C registration is $33 cheaper, but we are paying $2 more for renewal compared to EL and $67 more compared to B-truck.

Good assessment; however, we both know what is going to happen given they have already tacked on $100 a year electric fees to Passenger, B truck and motorcycle.

Yep, I guess we could then switch to B-truck vanity plates ($164+$100 renewal), but I do like the C.

but with C plates, I think you will be limited to where you can park in Chicago, as you cant park a truck over 8k lbs on a city residential street or a boulevard.

Good to know. I was not aware of that.

I noticed that Amazon delivery vans have C plates, but they are probably exempted when delivering packages.

Yep while delivering or executing business they are exempt, but outside of that no. I guess I will get a vanity plate. I am waiting for my plates to arrive.
