Universal Wall Charger installation - does it require "Tesla approved" electricians?

Not sure if we were specifically talking about the Cybertruck, part of the thread wasn't, doesn't really matter though.

The Cybertruck ONLY supports vehicle to home with specific equipment in specific situations. You have to have the PowerShare wall connector probably additional equipment.

No other devices or vehicles are supported.

In this particular case, the first sentence is a requirement.
It's also something that is not available today.

When it comes to Universal Wall Charger installations, does it require an electrician that has been approved by Tesla and has some kind of special access into the Tesla app ecosystem? I read through the installation documents and it seems like the installer has to do something special in a special Tesla app to make the Universal Wall Charger get included into my Tesla app.

I was considering using an electrician I know, but not sure if that person is certified by Tesla or not.

Please share if you have any insight on this. Thank you.

OK. Summarizing all the replies, if you plan to install just UWC/WC you don’t need Tesla certified electrician. If you want to have PowerShare functionality then Tesla does require certified electrician appointed by Qmerit who handles all PowerShare projects as of right now.
If you don’t have a PW and you want to use charger for PowerShare you have to buy the bundle (Gateway+UWC), there is no option to choose between UWC or WC.
If you do have PW then go for WC as it is all you need. No Tesla certified electrician will be needed in this case.

I have pre-existing power wall and setup that is compatible with power share, installed my own UWC, on 60A circuit that is part of the backed up loads, but it's not enabled. I assume this is because I haven't gotten them to validate / turn it on on Tesla side. Anyone know who to contact to get this turned on?

Yes, the question was about UWC installation and using it for PowerShare, so I assumed that he has PowerWall (PW). Otherwise, it wouldn’t be questionable, since for non-PW installation, the Gateway is a must and is offered only as a bundle with UWC. A Tesla-certified electrician is required for Gateway installation, similar to a PW installation, which is quite understandable. I just didn’t expect to explain such obvious things in details.?

It appears that if you have a Powerwall, that in the future you may have additional solutions, but I'm pretty sure that at least configuration will have to be performed by Tesla authorized agent. It is very possible, actually probably that most single Powerwall installations won't work. (You don't connect the vehicle charger to a single powerwall.)

Most people won't use Powershare. They'll use the mobile connector or the wall connector and in instances where they already have another EV, the Universal wall connector.


Do you want to attempt to use Powershare and are ready for the extra cost that it may entail? If no, follow the last statement.

If yes, just sit back and wait.

Just think about it: why would I need PowerShare today if I have PowerWall? ? I’m already covered against blackouts. It would be strange to pay an extra $2000 for the Gateway and another ~$4000 for Tesla-certified installation. I can wait, and I’m sure most PW owners will choose that path.

Another point: no installer can confidently tell you where they would install the additional Gateway in an existing PW configuration. Can you explain how two logic boards are going to agree on which feed to prioritize, PW or CT?

No particular rush, as we have pretty reliable power, and have never emptied the power wall. Though, It would be interesting to see if arbitrage could be possible, I have a pretty big price difference between peak and off peak, and have NEM with solar. They've allowed it for the power wall.

I haven’t seen those. They might be some sort of Tesla beta testers. Your PowerWall is the controller that will trigger CT to start feeding your house. That requires new firmware to enable this functionality.

Though from that thread it sounds like it takes a few (many?) calls to support I'm holding with them now (45m and counting). Guess I'll update if I figure something out.
