I put some ceramic on it, it didn’t change the color, but maybe that will offer a little protection

My lower trim plastic got beat up from driving on a gravel road once. The plastic is soft.

There is money to be made in the aftermarket world for armored exterior trim. Even if its just stick on, TPE aluminum or steel...like BestEVMod bumper protectors, but for the top rail of tailgate and such. Don't remember even getting close to that piece during week 1 before spotting a nice deep gouge from tonneau to rear steel?

Tesla must have a good reason for using soft plastic trim pieces, but I can't tell you what it is.
One thought is replacement cost is less for this this formulation of plastic. Another is easy removal and replacement. Perhaps if the plastic trim was hard and less malleable, it would break or crack easier for off-road adventures? I too was surprised how easy the sail trim scratched. Then when checking it learned my fingernail could make a groove into the plastic easily. Hopefully Tesla plans to make replacement parts at a low cost because these pieces are going to look bad on some of our trucks in a short time.
