Sounds like a engineering & materials design flaw and liability to release a production vehicle with a windshield that cracks so easily.
Really? You should try visiting the Rivian forum. Much smaller windshield, much higher rate of cracking. Tesla is already making more electric trucks than Rivian, Ford and GM put together.

Maybe Tesla glass just has a high defect rate?
In 2000 I bought a Volvo S80. After a few owner reports of cracking, the Volvo forum started theorizing the rate of breakage was unusually high. The same thing happened with my F-150 ten years later. Then five years later the same thing happened to my Mazda CX-5. Then it happened with my Tesla Model 3. The same thing is happening on the Rivian Forum.

In fact, glass is fragile and can have internal stresses in it when it leaves the glass factory. Glass breaks. You can go on any car forum on the Internet, particularly a brand new model, and find new owners claiming the rate of breakage is too high. It tends to happen when the car is pretty new. Once the glass has gone a couple of years without breaking, the rate of breakage goes way down.

I haven't seen enough breakage on the Cybertruck to make me think it's any more likely to break. If anything, Rivian does seem to have an unusually high rate. Not sure why. Maybe it's my imagination.

Don’t get your panties in bunch fanboy. This will be my third Tesla, with two Tesla Solar projects underway and two Starlink Subscriptions. Most people think I’m an Elon “Fanboy” and I guess I am. I just know Tesla Engineers can do better and we as customers should expect better. Just because the competition has a low bar doesn’t mean we should accept mediocrity. That’s what separates Tesla and SpaceX apart.

I’m worried now. This is going to suck if we can’t mitigate heat using tint or a reflective sun shield over the “dash”. Sounds like a engineering & materials design flaw and liability to release a production vehicle with a windshield that cracks so easily.
What data do you have that the Cybertruck windshield cracks at a higher rate than other windshields?

Oh, you just made it up? I thought so.

Glass is glass, and glass breaks.
Yup, they crack or break too easily, allow too much heat in, lack of privacy and in long run are costly. One reason why insurance has become so costly.

Reason why I never want a glass roof. I hate this trend of glass roofs in cars.

I want a Cybertruck with a roof made of Hard Frikin Steel (HFS).

I suspect Tesla would never make the safety compromises or take the range hit for making a Cybertruck with a metal roof instead of glass which imparts more structural integrity than an equivalent mass of metal and helps maintain headroom and a reduced frontal area. As someone who is 6'-04", I'm always thankful for the extra headroom afforded by the glass roofs in my Tesla.

This means it's time to start your own automotive company so you can manufacture vehicles how you think they should be made. If you do it well, you could outsell Tesla! More competition is a good thing!

Agree 100%. I don’t know why we always feel the need to defend Tesla when criticism is deserved.

They without a doubt have an issue with cracking. As long as they honor the replacement and own this issue, that’s fine. It’s still a headache to go through the SC though.

hopefully they are working to try and improve this issue. It’s without a doubt not isolated to a few customers. Idk what qualifies as “wide spread”, but it’s certainly frequent enough for us to ask for improvement.

What about after factory warranty is expired?

Insurance will have to raise rates and many other owners will have to pay out of pocket.

Non-glass roof would give lower long-term cost of ownership
lower insurance, lower out of pocket
fewer days in shop
fewer trips to ship (& less hours driving there and back)
fewer days vehicle not available.

I’m preemptively contacting vendors to create replacement for the Rear Passenger Roof Glass with a removable top similar to Jeep Freedom Tops.

Just browsing the forum and saw this comment. I figured I’d share that my windshield cracked while the window tinting installers were cleaning the glass. No impact on the outside, it cracked with concentric circles while all they were. Doing was spraying with glass cleaner and wiping with microfiber cloths. Tesla did not cover under warranty but the shop said they would cover the cost if tesla didn’t cover under warranty.

I wasn’t at the shop so I can’t tell exactly what happened but those people are professionals and do all sort of exotic cars in in Atlanta including a bunch of cybertrucks already. So much for armored glass.

The front windshield cracked on my 2023 F150 Raptor at the tint shop after they tinted it. So I don’t think this is just a Cybertruck Issue.

FYI for anyone concerned about Tesla not covering a cracked glass roof because it was tinted, Tesla has now officially partnered with Xpel and is directly selling Xpel tint packages for their entire vehicle lineup on this webpage (not sure if this is limited to certain US markets or is a nationwide partnership). The packages for the CT include the glass roof. To me this 100% alleviates all concerns about tinting the glass roof.

Noticeably absent from the CT tint packages is the windshield….so questions remain with respect to warranty coverage of a cracked windshield that has been tinted.
