Those saying a key will not do anything. Go test it for us on your truck and post some pictures. :) I just don’t believe that you can drag a key on the truck and not see anything.
I didn't say you wouldn't be able to see anything, I said it could easily be polished out. I've already polished one side of my Cybertruck as an experiment. It had a lot of fine scratches in it from bushwhacking through branches and mud. They polished out as if they were not even there.

I'm extremely certain that can be buffed out. It does not look very deep. I'm sorry this happened but take it to a service center and they will take care of it.
Agreed. That is a very shallow scratch, because the metal is so hard. I don't know why so many people doubt this. It's probably about 1/10,000ths of an inch deep while the metal is 1.4 to 1.8 mm thick. You don't even have to take it to the service center if you have a random orbit sander, the right abrasive pads, and can follow simple instructions.

It's just metal with no coatings.

@Feartoy

PLEASE POST
- location / parking lot (i guess near San Diego)
- date was Friday Sept 27
- any other updates (did you inform police?)

We need to shame this person

I would go as far as printing signs in the lot with the guys face and warn others about this creep.

Make an example.

Who said you wouldn't see anything?

Either way, we haven't seen anything because @Feartoy didn't include a picture!

So many people on here and other internet locations have made that statement. I just find it annoying because even something not has hard as the cold rolled steel could still leave a mark but it seems like many don’t believe it.

I Don't know what the dirtbag used oops.. the upstanding shoe less crackhead.. oops this great outstanding person used ...
its not a matter what the tool it was... a key, a knife, a rock ... the fact is he vandalized my truck with a tool that left lasting effect on me and my truck.
I don't know what it was but it penetrated the stainless steel to scratch my truck... it doesn't rub off as easy as a like a finger print does ( that's funny ) the metal was damaged.
to " Key a car " is to add damage to the surface of ones car / truck ...
the act of one doing that is what we should address not the tool he used...
Agreed! This sucks and I hope you are able to get it removed completely.

You can scratch the stainless with a simple green pad, so it shouldn't be a surprise to people that a key made of hardened steel would scratch it also.

However if it was an aluminum key there would be zero damage. In general I agree the scratch from even a hardened steel key shouldn't be deep.

I have a small scratch on the edge of my passenger side door - I'm not sure what made it. Guessing it was from a jewel on a friends ring somehow while they were putting stuff in, but not really sure. It's not actually visible to other people, so buffing it out would likely make the door look worse.

So many you can't quote any?

thanks for not blurring his face-I'd offer him my stainless steel pressure cooker for free to key it as much as he wants-if it releases his stress!

So what do we do in this situation. Call police and file a report?

Like that person here who had a random guy spit on his truck and got caught. The police asked if he would like to press charges. He declined, but I wouldn't have. Do dumb shit, get shit consequences.

Sorry that happened to you and I would also be extremely frustrated. My comment about the tool used wasn't intended to distract from your loss, which totally is an important and valid part of the thread and I wish you well. There are multiple points of discussion in now, like how badly it can damage, how it can be fixed, etc. thanks for sharing!
