Following this thread....Just got my title and see that it's registered as a Commercial vehicle. When I had other pickup trucks, I was always able to register them as automobiles, not commercial because I didn't have a business. Did something change? I don't think all Cybertrucks should have been automatically registered as Commercial when Tesla submitted the paperwork to DMV.

DMV site is confusing.

“Commercial vehicles that are designed, used, or maintained primarily to transport property or people for hire, compensation, or profit must be registered.” NOT.

Commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or combined gross vehicle weight (CGW) of 10,001 lbs. or more, along with most trailers, need to be registered as commercial vehicles. NOT

Depending on the use, commercial motor vehicles can include:
  • Pickups: A “commercially used” motor truck with a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 11,500 lbs., an unladen weight of less than 8,001 lbs., and equipped with an open box-type bed less than nine ft. in length. NOT because it is not commercially used.
  • Multipurpose vehicles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, and station wagons can be registered as passenger or commercial vehicles, depending on their use. OK
  • Exclusions
For registration purposes, these vehicles aren’t considered commercial vehicles:
    • Passenger vehicles: Not used to transport people for hire, compensation, or profit. BINGO

Why are registrations automatically getting assigned commercial and need to figure out process to veneer
Any luck changing it to automobile instead of commercial? I just got my title and see that it is commercial, too and don't have a business or need for commercial registration.

Looking to see how your Cybertrucks are being registered in various states. Mine in CA was registered as “commercial” as opposed to “automobile”. First wanted to see if that is universal for CA and then for other states. For commercial vehicles CA collects more fees. This state!
But you get to park in the yellow zone?

Believe it or not, this is one of the benefits I'm taking into consideration on whether to go through the hassle and petition CA DMV to switch to automotive plates instead of commercial...it's about an extra $260 per year for the registration.

I agree the commercial tag isn’t really fair. I have never been paid to haul...
...But you did use a truck that weighs more and takes up more space and is more likely to kill a pedestrian. Which means roads have to be designed with that in mind.

It's no big deal to pay your fair share.

I'm already paying more for my Zero anyhow.

I'm in California and just received my plate and registration. It is listed as Commercial and it says Total Fees $1,416. Crazy.
