So assuming we DO magically get it for current day CT's (which you've said is not going to happen due to the cathodes) We wouldn't be able to retroactively take advantage of the credit?

This is for the standard EV credit btw not the commercial one.

I think that's going to be a big problem for Tesla. Frankly I'm surprised they didn't do something to address this early on.

Literally every manufacturer has made it a point to make their mid-trim trucks eligible for it. Technically the CT is now is $7,500 more than its equivalent competition; one of which will have 65 more miles of range. The Lariat Extended Range can easily be found in the under $70k range with really the only sacrifice when compared to the CT is slower charging speeds. CT has burned through the premium buyers and now has to compete with the others for the average buyer. I can only assume that Tesla employees are frantically trying to find a way to make the CT tax credit eligible.

(As has Panasonic, I think)

Smart Cybertruck buyers will hold off ordering until the new dry cathode battery 4860 cells go into production. They are only a few months away. As a bonus the new cells may qualify for the $7500 tax credit.

Gotcha, have they provided any estimates on when those will be implemented so that the CT becomes eligible?

Different tools for different folks. For example, I have a cargo trailer for the really heavy stuff. As long as I can comfortably tow 10k, I'm good. I don't need to load a pallet of concrete onto the bed of my truck. I need to haul an assortment cargo. I think we've discussed it on other threads. There's the local and farm guys that need payload at the expense of range, and the long trippers who need bed space for lighter loads, plus towing stability and range. That said the Silverado LT has 1,800lbs, Lightning 1,900lb payload which is in line with current half ton averages. Will buyers here be willing to spend an extra $7,500 for above average 1/2 ton pickup payload? That's probably a better question.

Maybe as a cost guy I'm too fixated on value proposition and dollars, but I'm pretty sure the average person has been cutting back on expensive purchases. I've read quite a few entries here about "not a good time for me to buy right now"; cost of living increases and all. This is just in the EV space. Doesn't include the $12k MSRP discounts on ICE trucks that make a fully loaded Denali pickup less expensive than a low/bottom trim EV truck.

By the time the dry cathode gets into large volume production to the point where its being used to fulfill enough orders... it's gonna be late 2025, minimum. By then, the credit likely won't even exist anymore.

It takes the legislative branch to kill the credit, so it may still exist.
However, in 2025, Chinese sourced minerals make the vehicle ineligible. So supply chain is critical.

It depends how much one is towing and how much remaining payload they need for passengers and cargo. Cybertruck AWD will post similar numbers with range extender, but has less max towing.

Or am I missing something? I hear about this $7500 a lot.. but what is the percentage of people actually buying/who are interested/can ‘afford’ ?

we all know in the past that when previous incentives were given ($3500 new EV owner) the OEMs just conveniently marked the price up the same…

the $7500 was rumored to avoid this, but what is the percentage of take-rate… I think it’s very limited to businesses and such… how does this help the average joe?

Yea i'm also curious as to how long they will let you kick the can down the road. Up until now it hasnt been a big issue I suppose but I wonder if at some point they'll set a reservation end date. Maybe once they push single motor into production.

Personally, I just pulled the trigger. I assumed and planned for the purchase without the credit so i'd rather just get it 6-12 months sooner.

When it comes to the Federal Tax Credit, you must remember there are only 2 reasons a credit like this even exists: 1) The goal is to increase EV adoption. 2) Some politicians want to look good to their constituents. The goal is NOT to use our money. Because that money lowers what's available for other programs. There is more interest in propping up less desirable EV models, than to save us money on the more desirable models. If one can use the regulations to get a savings on your EV, great. But I'm sure that there is a concerted effort to make this credit harder to actually get.

Yeah, though since we have Beast and all Terrains are needed for max payload, we are already on the suboptimal side of things...
Beast + range extender + 11k trailer + wife + dog is going to be close...
