that is the mother of all bad ideas. Lets see how a LEO responds when driving by you and sees the phone mounted to the TOP of your steering wheel, in front of you FOV

Nobody here uses the talk to text built into the Tesla software? It reads the text messages and gives you an opportunity to respond using the microphone button.
Yes, I often run other map apps in parallel to verify the main screen's route, plus there are other messaging apps besides iMessage. Likewise, there are a variety of reasons to monitor what is incoming with messages, pings, news and weather alerts on your phone and having it open and right in your range of vision gives it the feel of a heads-up display. You do not have to look away from the road.

What I just read was:

Distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving, distracted driving.
And of course you have to look away from the road. f nothing else it's a big focus change for the eyes.

For example I don't have an iPhone and iMessage isn't a thing. : D
But it's a great point I hope they add the ability to respond to messages in more apps, but for now being able to respond to any type of message at all should be done in the safest way possible. And this is the only way possible at the moment.

No texting while driving, nor while stopped, finger poke for clearing, information mentally noted.

The phone is below my view of the road, so it is probably as illegal as the HUD in other cars.

No strikeouts for watching your phone and you can apso rest your hands on the sauircle if you want to type. Yes, it moves, that's a minus, but at least it reminds you that something is going on outside.

We definitely need better visibility and safe use of the phone with/without FSD. Being able to charge without plugging in is also a must. (Plugging in my phone feels ancient, like I'm using a fax machine or quill pen). Here's a pic of how I modded Teslas wireless desk charger for the CT. I'll post a separate message in the mods thread too with more pictures of how it was done. This works great. Can see the whole phone in vertical or horizontal orientation. It doesn't slide off the edge, or fly forward during a fast stop. Can give a quick glance to Waze, or a quick button press. FSD treats it just like touchscreen use, so warnings are still available for your safety.

I am able to charge both my iPhone and my Android. So I'm not sure what you are referring to?

Which vehicles did you have before that supported wireless charging?

And using phone while driving? That's called distracted driving and is illegal.
