Great teardown of the Cybertruck sound system subwoofer and analysis of why it sounds so good -- by @DaveMattson

Secret of the Cybertruck Subwoofers Revealed!

If you've listened to a Cybertruck's audio system, the first thing you'll notice is that it has deep bass, but there are only two 8" subwoofers with small enclosures under the rear seat, buried in the floor. What's the secret? ?

Tesla Cybertruck Cybertruck subwoofer teardown reveals why stereo system's bass is so good 1732220254025-c5

Removing the enclosure, it looks like it is a simple ported enclosure. But it is so small, and the port is gigantic. Not a great way to get lots of bass.

The secret is revealed by that foam gasket. The enclosure tightly mates up to the frame and creates a much larger sealed enclosure, using all of the dead airspace within the structural frame cavity!

This cavity extends backwards past the rear wall, and up the C pillar. Very clever engineering, with typical Tesla cross-functional cooperation.

Having a larger sealed enclosure allows for a deeper bass response, while still being punchy and even across the spectrum. Typical vehicle subwoofers use a ported design which can be smaller but is tuned for specific frequencies and is less controlled.

Great engineering by Tesla however I can't help but wonder if this is could be a cause for developing creaking noises from the rear cabin area. I hear rattling from the bass vibrations but is the strategic usage of frame space adding to the progressive creaking and rattling as time passes.

That is very Tapped Horn like (look it up) bass setup. I've had several of those in my Home Theater over the years and the results with a smaller woofer and lot's of power can be impressive. I didn't even listen to the sound system in my 45 minute Cybertruck test drive as I was concentrating on other things. To be honest, I'm seldom impressed with any sound system with six 15" high excursion bass drivers across the front of my HT and 12K watts driving them, I have all frequencies well covered. :)

Yeah I wonder how many self-professed audiophiles have ripped the OEM sub woofers out and replaced them with something that actually has less performance ?
Probably none. My understanding is that the speakers are connected by etherloop so there is a controller and connection to the Etherloop that might make replacing the speaker difficult.

I was actually wondering why the sub was so weak. ??‍♂ I’d say that’s the only element of the audio system that I was a little disappointed in. Not to the point I’d modify it though.

This might explain my rattle with loud base, could be in the cross member.

Something I noticed is the radio is louder than when using amazon/youtube/apple, etc. I like the few extra DB the radio gives. Would be nice if we could find a hidden gain control somewhere and turn it up more.

Sorry, what's HT?
Sorry, HT is the abbreviation for Home Theater for those of us really into it and is a hobby (obsession) other than BEV trucks so understandably foreign to most. :)

" Low bass and sympathetic vibrations" refers to the phenomenon where a low-frequency bass sound can trigger vibrations in other nearby objects that naturally resonate at similar frequencies, essentially causing them to "vibrate in sympathy" with the bass sound, even if they aren't directly being played or touched; this is due to the principle of sympathetic resonance"

This principle is well know in the portion of the Audio world where bass is king. Tesla may have unintentionally created this by a lack of knowledge in this area. After all, they can't be expert in everything ...
