The way I see it, they're going to need to honor the original quoted prices for the original promised features for anyone who already placed a reservation.

That said, some of the newer features like 4 wheel steering and the solar vault could definitely be upgrades.

Honoring the original reservation price is great motivation for people to finalize their orders because they'll be getting a better price than anyone ordering in the future.

Lets see look at our check list for 2022 being an awesome TSLA year:

Giga Berlin on track? Check
Tera Texas on track? Check
4680 Cells (finally) starting production? CHECK!
Demand for EVs and Teslas is off-the-hook? Double Check
Margins at an all-time-high and increasing? Check!
Cybertruck production started? Oops….

5 out of 6 ain’t bad, when the Cybertruck comes online ?
Apparently forgot to mention: “Massive Corporate buyer to suck up demand in Q4? Check”

I think this was the article where I read about it... But sounds like it could just be a rumor/speculation

https://insideevs.com/news/525982/tesla-models-buyers-delivery-delays/
Yeah, that's entirely speculation.

People who bught leftover or inventory vehicles do get to jump ahead of those with specific orders - but Tesla will gladly sell people waiting for a specific vehicle one from stock that someone else didn't want.

That's why they do the things like tell people 'you can have it now if you get 6 instead of 7 seats' or 'you can have delivery now with X battery pack instead of Y'. It's always about the options, not the price.

Prices be dammed at the end of the day Tesla has proven battery tech and better charging network. If I get an EV truck it'll have to be CT.

Rivian looks great and I hope it does well, but they don't have proven reputation with customer products yet (may be able to change my mind by time CT hits production though).

Lightning I fear will have limited production and hurdles at dealership that make getting a reliable price quote, well, unreliable.

Bottom line, if it gets to expensive I fold. The value proposition is gone. Why overburden myself with an inflated car loan. An oppressive loan is more limiting to my freedom than giving in to an emotional desire for newest shiny thing on the block.

that isn't the definition of bait and switch, fyi.
What do you call it when you tell someone “If you give me $100 Today I’ll sell you a truck for $40k“, but then when it comes time you say “Thank You very much, but I lied, I want $45k for the truck”?

Fraud?

A promise is a promise, contract wiggly words be damned. If you agree to a thing and take someone’s money or at least have the decency to tell them you aren’t going to as early as possible. Even a bad mechanic calls you up and tells you they won’t be able to hit their estimate.

There is no fraud, read your pre-order contract. I think even Elon is aware that there aren't really 1 million CT orders.

I said pretty clearly I wasn’t talking about contractual wiggle words.

1.) Tesla will do a run of production with 4 wheel steering and charge a premium. $8k -per unit is my guess. Many reservation holders will be happy to pay this to move up in line and get the 4 wheel steering. I know I will. This will likely be the CT3, but could be CT2 if batteries are a constraint.
2.) Next run will also be 4 wheel steering, whichever model was not produced in 1.) also with the premium.
3.) Then the 4 wheel steering CT1 with the premium.
4.) Then on a low key basis there will be runs of the models with the 4 wheel steering delete per the reveal. Most reservation holders will have upgraded at that point, but TSLA will honor the reservation amount.
5.) Once the original reservation holders are gone we might see the 4 wheel steering delete go away.

As far as options:
the end of line changes don't really matter. Tires, wrap etc.
Interior colors don't really change the process too much as long as the seats are the same plug and play.

The solar cover is harder than people might think. Each slat is a group of cells wired in series or parallel Each connection a point of failure with sand and grit getting in there. If the housing needs to change I would not doubt it if this was cancelled. It won't be cheap either. $3,500?

The elephant is the battery options. If the mega castings are standardised between models why wouldn't the structural pack external dimensions be standardised? Then how hard would it be to offer 3-4 battery options across models? CT1 or 2 with the 500 mile pack. Or the CT2 with a LFP 400 mile pack etc. I cannot wait to see the engineering architecture here. Again this would be an opportunity to reprice.

That said I would be happy to pay ~ $63k ish for a CT2 with a 400 mile range LFP pack and 4 wheel steering. (plus FSD and delivery).

Tesla is not interested in making a profit as much as it is interested in changing the world.
Changing the world and making a profit are not only NOT mutually exclusive, the former depends on the latter. The way it looks Tesla will always have more demand than supply. That differential can help drive more profit to be invested in changing the world faster. Let's say you have reserved a $50K CT2, if there is a new government rebate of $10K and Tesla raises the price of your CT2 to $60K, you still pay what you were hoping for, Tesla gets to build another new factory sooner and change the world even faster. Would you be OK with that?
