I dont think we will need wipers on mars.. so who cares.
Magnetic wipers would actually be the worst as you'd have all the iron oxide stuck to it. The reason why Mars is red.

it would be easier than trying to clear a centimeter or more of ice from the panel or mechsnical flap from which a wiper would hope to emerge.
Why?

Seems to me it's easier to take ice off a smooth surface than a delicate one like wipers sticking out into the ice.

Tesla already has a hot weather cabin temperature control. It might make sense for them to deploy a similar thing with cold weather as well, particularly since Musk says it doesn’t need a garage. Just needs to keep the windows above 35 degrees to prevent frozen windshields.

Unless meltwater is removed, refreezing may occur in undesired areas. I am in agreement with you, just adding irrational fears.

An intermittent wipe would use way less energy than heating the glass over hours.

Tesla’s own recommendation on the Model 3 is to move the wiper into Service Mode, when snow or freezing precip is imminent or expected. This is due to the fact that in their resting state the wipers are below the defrost heat being directed at the windshield. Which would be similar in the concept you two are discussing. The ability to thaw the windshield wipers from the glass using the defrost is more effective than the area in which they’re being stored in their resting place.

A simple heating element could help, however, if you’ve ever tried to open a Model 3 handle with a glaze of ice over, and you read Tesla’s recommendations..”bang the area with the end of your fist” is not exactly user friendly. Putting your wipers into Service Mode, and using the powerful defrost on the windshield, is much more user friendly and practical.

Lasers would be more cool.
So long it doesn't refract off something shiny on the windscreen and take out you eyes and make holes in your upholstery. :p

Melting ice into water through a phase change takes a heap of energy because of the latent heat of fusion. Better off using antifreeze and a wiper, or just program the wiper to run intermittently whilst it snows or rains depending on temperature...that feature is only one OTA software update away. Also gets rid of parking tickets.
