This is cool but can someone smarter than me explain the practical application since I need my truck to stay charged so I can drive it? Is this all about power cycling? Charge to 80% at night, feed the grid down to 20% (assuming home) during peak, rinse repeat? What if I need the car at 4pm and it’s down to 20% cause I forgot to turn off the feed? Power cycling powerwall makes sense but I don’t take the power walls for a drive…

I’m not from Cali so not entirely sure about the programs there, but you can specify how much % to sell back to the grid at the higher peak price, buy low sell high. I’d have to aggree tho why would I want the extra degradation on my cars pack when my full cycles are limited. Ok keep my freezer on, but full on grid support is what LFP cells are for, even that is pushing it.

The value of electricity on the grid is quite volatile, especially during heat waves and other triggering events. I believe this is less about regular day/night cycling (although there will likely be some of that too) and more about solving brown-outs. The wear and tear on the battery is nothing compared to the value of the electricity, when electricity spikes in price. Having that stored energy distributed through the grid can prevent shortages and thus price spikes (which impacts the price of all electricity delivered, even if it's generated conventionally). It's a win/win for the battery owner/utility.

Show me the money! Could this actually pay for the truck in the long term?
Nope. At some point, the battery cycles will need to be included in the sale of a BEV. A potential buyer of a used V2G 55k mileage vehicle could have nearly dead battery because the original owner used the vehicle everyday to make arbitrage profit. (So the depreciation of the vehicle would / should tank greater than one’s per kW profit.)
Am I wrong?

This is fantastic news! I think the Tesla team severely underestimated the amount of red-tape they would have to wade through to start making this happen, but this is a huge confidence booster.

If you have a large solar array, this is an absolute no brainer. people are about to make a ton of money.

Looks like CT is all powered!

I signed up for it but since Powershare doesn't work at my house I was really only hoping to get Tesla to look at my system and try to get it working rather than taking part in the V2G program.

Going through this process right now with SCE/Tesla and received a message about upgrading SCE’s meter….

Southern California Edison (SCE) will be implementing a fee of $945.00 for the installation of the Net Generation Output Meter (NGOM). This device serves as a submeter, allowing the utility to accurately track the input and output of electricity.

I am thinking of applying, but my panel and home to grid connection was not done with permits. Everything works well, I have solar and had powershare. My hesitation is this CT to grid will trigger someone from PGE to come inspect and it will eventually come to bite me.
