These conversations are going in circles, we have been through all of this. The arguments don't really make that much sense, at least not from an engineering perspective. Too many dumb arguments for 4 motors have been responded to with intelligent arguments to re-hash that here.

The bottom line is, will they ever put a 4 motor in it? Who knows, but I wouldn't want it as I have
confirmation from a Tesla employee that I know personally who said it's a tri-motor.

They can get 1500hp out of it and sub-3-sec 0-60 and still make it efficient enough to get 500 miles range with a single legacy motor up front. The two rear motors are carbon-wrapped units.

Let's put this to rest. Please.

I want 4 motors for this reason:

When it rains or snows and I drive up the 1-mile of dirt road to my house, I have to put my dual-motor model S into slipstart mode. If I don't, the car comes to a complete stop in the road as it is impossible to make uphill progress without slipping the tires. So I engage slipstart and proceed home. When I get home, my car's brakes are smelling of extreme heat. With a 4-motor solution, the brakes will no longer be needed to prevent or slow the spinning of a tire when driving in slow, "off-road" situations.

You are the one who keeps rehashing this, and talking in circles. You KEEP bringing up that you don't need 4 motors because you can get the same power from three. That is true, but NOT the reason for having 4 motors. At least not the reason I want four motors...

You could run with 4WD using only a single motor and 3 differentials, but that's not necessarily the least complex nor most efficient configuration.

With 4 motors, there's no need for differentials at all. Is a motor heavier than a differential? :unsure:
My thinking on this follows what they did on the Semi to maximize range. When the truck is cruising, only 1 motor is engaged at a time pushing the truck. The other 2 motors are disconnected via clutch when not needed. When acceleration is needed, you engage the other 2 motors. This way they can have 1 motor which is super efficient and 2 which are super powerful. You get the benefits of both without the loss in efficiency of having multiple motors engaged all the time.

The quad motor design will be less efficient than the tri motor. The quad motor will be more performant in some cases. The question is whether the quad motor is where they make the trade off. After seeing the semi, I was thinking we’d see the tri motor as the LR option and possible quad for performance later on. Hitting that 500m range target I think is their biggest goal and Tri motor seems like the best path to get it.

Most likely 3 motors is going to get you there. If you are climbing most of the weight will be on the rear tires. The steeper the slope, the more the weight sits on the rear end.

Most likely 3 motors is going to get you there. If you are climbing most of the weight will be on the rear tires. The steeper the slope, the more the weight sits on the rear end.
I'm gonna buy the first Cybertruck offered to me, so IDGAF how many motors it has. My only point is that only Tesla knows what combinations work best, everything else is wild speculation.

I'm pretty sure that prior to the Semi event, nobody had "3 motors and clutch" on their Bingo card

Literally, you dug this up out of the blue again so you could say “I told you so”. I made a joke then agreed with you. Apparently I didn’t agree strongly enough so you got butthurt.

This is a thing nobody wanted to argue. You just sort of drummed the whole “Debate“ out of thin air even when nobody was arguing for quad.

Gotta be. Crushing the retail pickup market primarily accomplished by:

• alleviating normal range anxiety​
• alleviating towing range anxiety​

What does the Semi tech/approach tell us?

Probably most everything we need to know.

The cost, complexity, weight, and power draw of dual motors upfront outweighs the benefits.
The single front-mounted motor does what it needs to do, and helps it operate efficiently on the highway.

I'm not sure why you guys are so hung up on quad motors. It's not needed.
