Am I getting a USED Cybertruck?!

Tesla vehicles have always been custom ordered. I don’t remember reading about so much unsold CT inventory until recently. One member claims his local SC has nearly 100 CT’s in inventory.

I wonder if customers are having second thoughts and canceling orders and therefore forfeiting their deposits.

Technically, vehicles are manufactured in batches and buyers are matched to VINs based on a very limited set of available options. The last car I custom ordered was my 2002 BMW 540i, where my local dealer used one of their allocations to have a specific vehicle manufactured with the options I selected.

No question that Tesla ramped up quickly on the Cybertruck and burned through the reservation list faster than people expected, but that doesn't mean excess inventory is tied to an order that was placed.

So I just got my VIN assigned 5 days ago. I am still arranging the funds and insurance proof etc, and planned to get it done in a week. I popped into the local dealership in Utah just curious if one of the 15 cybertrucks on their lot was mine? He looked up the VIN and said my Cybertruck was waiting in a parking lot they had reserved off-site. And that I could take delivery in 2 days. I haven’t even paid yet. I said sure. And that I would do the funds tomorrow, and he scheduled my delivery time. No funds or anything signed. It just made me wonder if I got someone else’s rejected truck or something was off, because I assumed my VIN would be assigned and then after I paid, Tesla would ship it from Texas to Utah. I didn’t expect him to say I can get it from the other lot (unknown location) and have it delivered in a day or 2. Am I getting a second hand rejected truck?

The day I took delivery it took 15 minutes at the most only because it took about 10 minutes to find my way to the help desk. as I walk into an unattended parking lot with 4 cybertrucks parked in file with alphabetically marked parking spots. I looked at the trucks wondered which one is mine. I had read somewhere that there would be a name tag on it with my name. I didn't see that but I remembered what the last digits of my vin are. I can see that there is one here with my number on it and its in spot marked with a D the one next to mine in C has a red carpet under it and mine and the others just have black carpet A and B were gone already and I was a little early, so C was still there. a set of stairs led up to an empty lobby with 2 doors. I walk in and think there's no one here I think I can use my phone to gain access and just drive away in it. I was already heading back out to the truck as my friend opens one of the doors and tells me it's in here come on. I walk into a quite mellow dimly lit space with a row of desks along the backwall and one desk in the center 2 people worked on their computers in the back and the young lady in the center says I can help you here. Ok lovely I'm here to pick up my cybertruck She asked for my Driver's License I give it to her it takes her about 30 seconds to verify it. And says Ok sir you're all set your truck is in the slot marked with a D ill open it from here just use your phone. Walked out to my truck and got in with my phone and drove away. it was fast and simple there were 2 keycards on the dash.

You know I wonder the same thing about mine.
when I got mine, it was not clean especially the bed area.
I got it with 35miles on the odometer. but that don't mean much they can just reset it back to Zero.
also, I discovered that it had previously been to the SC already for a repair on a noisy fan.
another thing is my cargo divider did not fit my bed tracks and after 2 attempts by the SC they were not able to get it fixed and it remains derailed. that together with a small kink in my armor directly above my rear wheel well on the seem/bend. This is the type of damage that would be indicative of dropping hard on the rear axles like from a jump with a hard landing. which would also cause the divider not to fit.

It doesn’t all have to be drama and headlines. I’d say your truck’s fan just didn’t pass the dealer’s inspection (or had a known issue at manufacturing but they felt it was more efficient to have the dealer fix it), and you got the original cargo divider that wasn’t tolerant of the day to day differences in the trucks.

They are overloaded with Cybertrucks, this isn’t surprising at all. Until they sell through excess inventory the surplus will allow unusually low delivery timeframes. I would not be shocked if most Tesla delivery centers have to lease offsite lots, the few near me do.

Tesla Delivery centers are turning into Dealerships, the lots are full of every Model. It will be interesting to see if this continues and they change their business model. It eats into profits, but I have to imagine it also drives some incremental sales because a car can be an impulse buy for many.

Did you read this thread, 3 folks mentioned the same thing happened to them as the original poster, the Truck was already on site. That means excess inventory is tied to those orders, what else could it mean?

Are you sure? Don’t look online that only shows FS in the whole country, I bet if you ordered one you would get it in less than a week.

Im from Long Island I just put in my old Zip Code and it says available today when I start a purchase.

Did you read what I posted? Teslas aren't made to order, orders are matched to vehicles manufactured in batches or to vehicles already in inventory. If Tesla has excess inventory, then it means they manufactured vehicles faster than they're being ordered (or they've manufactured a particular configuration that is in lower demand). Excess manufacturing becomes excess inventory. It has nothing to do with cancelled orders, but rather with production exceeding demand.

Rolling back an odometer is a federal crime.

Your truck was dirty because it was transported from manufacturing to delivery and exposed to the elements.

A new vehicle has not been registered, it doesn't mean it hasn't been driven. A new vehicle can be driven or repaired before sale and still be new.

The service center should absolutely be repairing obvious defects before delivery, fixing your fan is an example of them doing something correctly.

Teslas haven't been custom made to order since the launch of the M3. They make them in batches based on demand. The batches of other cars are based on colors and options.

The pre-made a ton of CTs to accelerate the ramp/work out issues and to deliver faster in the 4th quarter. Tesla made almost 10k more CTs than they sold last year according to people like Troy.

Tesla reports inventory at quarterly earnings, they typically spike before 4q. At one point they had almost 50k cars in inventory, mostly the MY, but they efficiently cleared that out.

Tesla has always had inventory. Yes, they're historically high, but... they have always had units that failed an inspection, got lost, sales dropped through - this last one seems to be the most common, since people just sometimes don't show up with the check.
