BKF contains oxalic acid which should clean that up. A mild abrasive you could use would be a clear coat safe polishing compound. If you go with an abrasive it will probably make the area slightly shinier than the surrounding area.

As fate would have it, a bird pooped on mine yesterday. I left it there overnight and this morning when through my cleaning process. Easiest vehicle to clean!

Spray - leave for 2 hours - rinse and wipe - (Polish with glass cleaner I did not do as Iā€˜m just going to get it dirty again)

Awhile back I purchased a bag of citric acid from amazon and combined it with water to create a fairly strong mixture. I’ve experimented with spraying and leaving it on for 5, 30, and 2hrs+ before wiping off.

5 & 30 mins most small imperfections come out, bit of elbow grease required when scrubbing out.

2hrs+ it looks like shit when it dries and gets sticky to touch however has removed all inconsistencies. I can almost just rinse it off and the panel is left sparking (wiping down after and using the glass cleaner polish is required for a detailed level finish)

Up here in the North the road salt and sand cause havoc on the SS, citric acid took care of that, along with bug splatters, and other inconsistencies with ease.

I believe the manual recommends citri surf 77, not sure on the concentration however it’s ready to use out of the bottle and avail on amazon.
Roughly what was your mix ratio?

It depends on the bird poop. If it is acidic, it's basically removing the patina of the stainless steel. The longer you leave it alone, the more it'll recover it's patina to match the rest of the car. If you work to clean it, you're essentially removing the patina on more and more stainless steel around where the patina originally was removed. Some folks clean the entire panel...then the panel doesn't quite match the rest of the truck. Some folks think that is less noticeable than the bird poop pattern being there and fading with time.

I love the natural patina, so I just clean it up like I do normally and watch it fade with time.

Just an update: i used Citrisurf 77 and a blue scotchbrite pad as recommended in the DIY section of the owners manual and it removed 99% of the stain. Im sure if i kept going it would be gone completely. Hopefully this helps others in the same situation.

I see the DIY manual says to apply the Citrisurf77 to a microfiber towel or sponge, then rub it onto the steel. How much did you spray on the microfiber towel when applying it? Assume enough to get then panel wet (not just damp)?

I sprayed a microfiber 2-3 sprays just so the cloth moved over the surface and left a damp layer, and over about3-5 mins reapplied as needed to prevent it from drying out, then i sprayed it again on to the scotchbrite and gently went over the whole panel, for roughly 5 mins, reapplying as needed so it didnt dry out, then rinsed the whole thing off with water.

what do you think are the chances tesla will cover it under warranty?
The same chance GM or Ford would cover bird poop damage to the clearcoat under warranty. Basically zero!

Also- if i do need to sand it, do i also need to passivate it after?
You don't have to passivate after sanding, the stainless will self-passivate from exposure to rain and air. But after I've done mechanical polishing, I generally passivate it to protect my work from contaminates before it fully passivates on it's own.

Im just concerned BKF will mess with the overall finish. I tried gently rubbing it with a blue scotchbrite but no luck. Id really like to avoid having to buy a random orbital sander and redo the whole panel but if thats what i gotta do i guess i will… what do you think are the chances tesla will cover it under warranty?

Also- if i do need to sand it, do i also need to passivate it after?
Use the BKF "MORE Spray + Foam"... It doesn't have the abrasives so you don't really have to worry about scratching it up or changing the finish (much)...

Put it on, let it sit for about 30 seconds and wipe off... See how much comes off... if all gone, you're done... If SOME cleans up, try again and it will likely take care of it... If hardly any, then try and put it on and leave it for a couple of minutes...

Then, when you're done, use SprayWay on the whole panel to clean it all up...

Works for me!
