If the tailgate is down and you put it in reverse your are blind unless you lower the tonneau all the way so the rear view mirror can be used. Very dangerous situation. I didn't realize this and backed into the side of a truck across the street and never saw it even after hitting it. Most maddening. I recommend the following changes to the display to address this.

1. Display a warning on the screen when reverse is active and the tailgate is down.
"Retract Tonneau to view your direction with the rearview mirror"

2. Alternately, notify and fully retract the tonneau for this condition.

3. Modify the rear camera so it rotates with the tailgate to maintain rear vision at all times

This cost me dearly when I crushed the rear door of the truck I hit. My truck sustained no damage

Why did you start reversing without clearly identifying your surroundings?

The next version of the CT will probably address the camera issue, but you are the one who created this dangerous situation in the first place.

Have you removed the side mirrors on your truck or do you just not know how to adjust or use them?

I ask because there is no way that the broadside of a truck parked across the street cannot be seen in the sideview mirrors before you back into it.

I agree with others here. If your tailgate is down, and you can’t see backwards, then don’t go backwards. I’ve removed my mirrors, but use the camera system heavily when reversing. Also it’s rare to have the tailgate down and tonneau cover up.

You are not the first to do this. I've heard from others who have done the same thing.

Backing up the CT with the tailgate down and the vault cover closed is just like any box truck, like a U-Haul, though. Need to use the side mirrors / cameras, stick your head out the window or use a spotter.

I owned a 2019 Ram and it was the same. The tailgate had the camera and you can’t see anything behind you even with the tailgate down. You need to use your mirrors.

Those changes are silly, how annoying would it be for the vault cover set to retract every time the tailgate is open and the vehicle is put into D or R.

How do you think vans without cameras do it? Simple solution, don’t drive your truck with the tailgate down or have an auxiliary setup if it’s required to be open.

Came here to say the same thing. All pickups have this issue. I have a 2017 Ram 1500 that shows me ground quite nicely when the tailgate is down.

The side mirrors reposition to look down when in reverse so they were useless.

The truck I hit was not visible from any camera or mirror except for the rear view mirror and it was blocked because I only had the tonneau open to the top of the bed. I've never used that mirror in the past because it was always blocked and never realized it is only critical for reverse driving with the gate down

Are you saying you don't know how to modify the behavior of the mirrors? I think so. Check the Cybertruck Owner's Manual in the section on adjusting the mirrors. Knowing how to adjust your mirrors has always been a core responsibility of every motorist, even in the 1960's, and you now have more options to assist you than ever before.

backed into my partner’s older MY three days ago :—). The park assist chimes also do not account for the extra length when the gate is down. Luckily minimal panel damage to his. No damage to mine.

You can toggle off the setting for your mirrors to tilt downwards during reverse if you find yourself reversing a lot with your tailgate down.

Look man, a lot of people here are trying to help you understand that it's absolutely your responsibility to operate the vehicle safely, and it sounds like you aren't as well versed in the features and operating procedures yet. We all want to be more careful here, so it's a lesson learned.

Sorry this happened but you need to take responsibility for that accident ...It wasn't the trucks fault - damn man up...

FYI this is an option. There is a check-box for "tilt mirrors" when reversing.

Today on the highway I saw a Toyota Tacoma with a rack on top of the bed rails, and a tent on the bed. No rear-view camera, only side mirrors to see behind. Yes, limited visibility, like others have posted here about other ICE trucks.

Rivian R1T has a roof-mounted camera, which is a very nice feature. But knowing you have limited rear visibility, as others have suggested, use a spotter or your side rear-view mirrors. Mistakes happen, don't beat yourself up about it.
