Cold Feet and ICE

Just picked up my CT on Friday, but it's my third Tesla so I had a bit of the same XP moving from BMW 328s and 330s to the Model 3. The roar is attention getting but the the acceleration is soooooo much better that ICE cannot begin to compete. The AWD CT is almost as fast as my Performance Y and it feels faster due to it's monster size.

I can assure you that you will VERY quickly get over the "roar of the exhaust" as the "lurching" part is so much faster, they call the game "Need for Speed" not Need for Noise.

You will still get plenty of attention with the look of the thing, just not from the cops and neighbors who won't even here you getting a hard on......

This DOES bother me about my Silverado.
On early cold mornings, when I start the truck (it's backed in against the garage)... good GRIEF the LOUDNESS; it's actually embarrassing.

I had a 911 Turbo for six years - twin turbo, flat six, variocam and all the noises, vibrations and feels. My Model S Plaid? Bigger, quieter, quicker, more storage space, constantly improving - it's a 2021 model and I got automatic rear trunk opening last week, try that in an ICE mobile. Now the 911 was far better at handling and braking, not even a question, but 999 days out of 1,000 the Model S is superior machine/piece of technology/daily driver. That one day ever few years? I still miss the 911. But that moment on that day is fleeting. All I need to do is hop into the Model S and mash the go pedal! Oh, and I don't miss gas stations...or oil changes...or differential fluid changes...or transfer case fluid flushes....or timing belts/chains....or spark plugs...or any of the other dozens of regular maintenance items on an ICE'er.

The celebrity attention will hopefully fade in a few months as the CT becomes more common, but right now I just lean into it and put on my best happy owner/investor/salesman face and answer all the dumb Qs ;-)

Agreed I have a neighbor 3 doors down with a big ole diesel....every morning at 6:40a he fires it up to ensure we are all awake (jk but damn that thing shouldn't be allowed in a neighborhood with anyone trying to sleep)

I’m supposed to take delivery of my CT very soon (this week?).

I currently drive a new Silverado Trail Boss Z71 with a V8 and a nice custom grumbly exhaust.

While driving the last few days, I’m remembering how much I love the physical feedback when mashing the accelerator - the lurching and the roar of the exhaust.

I’ve driven a Model 3 once, but never owned an EV, so I’m starting to worry…

Am I going to end up being heartbroken? Haha

Just curious of others’ experience and thoughts…

you are really going to love it when autopilot gets downloaded. autopilot is my favorite feature. just pay attention, watch the road, and stay alert!

Get a custom wrap to make it look like a Chevy truck and nobody will notice. Tesla did Tundra and F-150 wraps to camo the test models before release

Got her a P100D. Jump to the present. She loves her Tesla and won't give it up for anything. She now *hates* loud cars. Have heard her say "If you are going to make that much noise you should have something to show for it". There once was a day when those cars were considered fast - now they look silly. There really isn't any going back. Once you experience the efficiency, power, and ride quality of an EV all ICE's feel like an old, wired, rotary phone.

Exactly! I thought I liked the song of my 90-degree V-twin Ducati with open airbox and carbon performance pipes for the inherent nature of the sound but, what I discovered when I went electric, was that I was really associating the sound with power, with forward thrust. I didn't like the sound for sound itself, but for the association with performance, with the way the engine would accelerate me. In other words, I was ignorant in thinking the sound had inherently good qualities.

After buying my Model 3 Performance, I started associating the sound of a gas engine with being slow and having nebulous and delayed throttle control. I didn't know the throttle had a delay in it back then, on a particularly responsive ICE vehicle it felt instantaneous to me. But what I learned when I went electric, was that all ICE cars have terrible lag to the throttle, a lack of torque when you need it, and they apply power to the pavement in a very uneven manner, interspersed with shifts and marred by torque curves that are far from flat. I used to enjoy getting the most out of an engine by knowing what gear to use (even in automatics) and when to shift to minimize the power delivery problems (or increase efficiency and reduce the cost of fueling, depending upon which driving mode I was in). That all suddenly vanished.

Now even the most modern and sophisticed ICE vehicle feels antiquated and like it has major faults with the power delivery. The small vibrations signal a crude and out-dated machine, even the sound of the exhaust has changed meaning, from something I used to relish, to something that signals impotence.

When I went electric, I learned that my liking of the exhaust note was simply ignorance that there was something better. That fact doesn't stop pro oil and gas interests from waxing poetic about the wondrous ICE sounds that you can't live without. That's either ignorance talking, or a strategy to slow the exodous from ICE vehicles. They are not above waxing poetic about exhaust noises simply to make people think twice before they stop contributing to their oil and gas revenue streams.

I need to add, the superior throttle control of an electric vehicle really shines in the Cybertruck, when negotiating steep, tricky sections with limited traction. 80% of that is due to that it has an electric powertrain, 20% due to the fact that Tesla nailed the invisible electronic traction controls, particularly on the recent update that came with upgraded traction and stability algorithms. The thing is so easy to drive on difficult off-road challenges it's unreal.

The beast will be my first Tesla/EV and I'm worried just like you. So much that my wife and I decided we will always keep a Porsche in the garage just in case. With time that might change like others have said but I'm with you, we got our tippy toes in right now before we jump in the water.

Cybertruck from Atlanta to Dayton Ohio this weekend, no issues. Between our Model 3 and Model Y, we've been on trips from the Great Lakes to the Floriday Keys and from the east coast to Branson Missouri.
The Cybertruck is our 5th EV, we have no ICE vehicles and I've been driving EVs for about 9 years.
