Yes. The panels are bolted to the chassis, you can use any material, like thicker armour, etc, but why?

Here is a pic of the chassis, you can see the mounting bolts.

You will have to probably bush the connection points depending on the material used and it's thermal expansion rate. This is also done on the CT seeing the aluminiun cast expands much faster underneath the SS skin that is also exposed to outside thermals (sunlight etc)

If it is not adequately bushed, the exterior panels will bulge, warp and become misaligned, which can also happen if driving from freezing coldto hot areas. Simply, even supposedly rigid things change with heat, so they need to change at the same rate.

Same applies for steel reinforcement in concrete, they both both have the same themal coefficient, otherwise the stell would crack the concrete etc.
