You can buy an amazing tent that pops open an amazing mattress, a nice light and a good quality extension cord for wayyy less. you camping on the side of a mountain ?

dont see the value at all, but i guess it could just be tesla fanboys that just want everything they make too if thats what it is just own it ;)
You can't buy a similar Heimplanet tent for "wayyy less", and the Tesla one is made by Heimplanet.

https://en.heimplanet.com/products/mavericks-basecamp

It's a different class of product.

If is super easy to setup and take down, i can see its value for occasional campers. Even it is a little pricey.

This would work great for the kind of campers that break camp every morning and travel to a new camp every day. But people that might camp in the same spot for multiple nights as they go on day rides/hikes/ or just want to see the scenery, need to consider that, if you want to use the truck to do these daytime activities, you need to "break camp" every day whether you want to or not. And you have no tent left behind to "reserve" whatever place you picked to camp.

Sure, it only takes a few minutes to set up and take down, but it's going to get old if you don't need to do it. Basically, I think truck-top tents are over-rated. This guy thinks a lot like I do (except he actually had to learn the hard way):

Hi all, SC installed the base camp for me today (in reality the ā€œinstallā€ involves just installing 6 pieces of tent frame holders in the right spots on the vault rail). I suspect that once there are more CTs in the wild and if demand for a $3k tent ever increase (big if!) end users will shipped these directly and can DIY the ā€œinstall.ā€ Weather is crappy here so I haven’t had a chance to try a full setup yet. From reading the manual and having a moment between rain showers to get through the first few steps of setup, I will say that its a bit more labor intensive to setup than I thought it might have been. In other words it’s not as simple as flip it open and it works. There’s some hardware removal, some attaching of pieces etc etc… stay tuned.

Please explain to me why would any of you order this vs just putting a tent on the ground, i can see literally no benefit of having it in the bed when no HVAC or pass-through exists. and especially at this price.
Campstream and others will make a window insert for HVAC.

Then don't buy it?

I love my RTT but does impact range on R1T. This wont.

For those with a nomad spirit, super nice being able to pull into a rough area with no particularly good tent spots in the dark with no planning, and in 5 minutes be cozy and horizontal for the night. Equally, no dirty tent, everything is clean and gets put away super quickly in the morning, ready to cruise onto the next random spot. I am watching this one closely; and if the guy figuring out the removeable back window comes up with a solution, ducting into the tent should be relatively easy.

Am I correct in understanding that two people can install or uninstall the tent in a few minutes? In other words, is this tent a practical solution for someone who doesn’t want to keep it permanently installed, but install and uninstall for camping trips? Thanks for the info! A.

PS: would love to see a video or photos of the frame holders and how they attch to the truck.

Supposedly it has to be installed by a tesla service center, which seems like it can not be correct.

Once they install it, can you please let us know if it is easily removable and reinstallable by the user? I would love to get one but couldn't keep it permanently installed because I will need the space...

Thanks!

A.
Will do!

Yes it’s removable - there are only two T25 bolts keeping it in place. However, it’s a little tricky to wiggle it out because of the angle and it weighs 90lbs. Not terrible, but worth considering.

Tomorrow I’ll try to take some pics/videos when it’s not raining.
