When the CT was revealed, I went from not wanting a new truck to having to have a CT, namely because of its apparent superiority for use in my hobbies of driving up poorly maintained 4WD roads so that I can fly off the top on my paraglider or hang glider. No more dust covered gear in the truck bed or “racing stripes” in the paint from brush and tree branches!
But then I got the truck and quickly discovered that despite the closed tonneau, it vacuumed dust into the truck bed! Thankfully, a simple seal at the bottom of the tailgate was an easy fix. But nobody was solving my need for easy-on / easy-off level racks for my 20-ft long hang glider. Thankfully, Tesla finally released their awesome crossbars which would cradle the CG and support the bulk of the hang glider’s weight but I had to come up with my own front and rear support racks. So I used some high performance suction cups and some wedges to modify an inexpensive Amazon truck rack and made my own front rack, also adhered with suction cups.
These two racks are not safety critical, if they pop loose the hang glider will support itself (and the rack) while I slow down and stop. When I’m not hauling the glider they quickly breakdown and lay flat in the truck bed. It’s great at highway speeds but I plan to add cable cross bracing to the front rack to mitigate sway on 4WD roads.
