Driving with the tailgate down (4'x8' loads). Any solution for rear view camera?

I am a Builder and often load 4'x8' material at a local building center (65 miles away). If I load 4x8 sheets in the back of my new CT with the tailgate down, the rear camera in the tail gate faces the ground. Is there any fix for this? Also charging with the tailgate down is a challenge due to the short Supercharger cables. Trying to back between superchargers that don't have obstructions (like signs) between them, is very tight with the 82" width of my new CT.

I've had this issue, though I don't need the tailgate down nearly as much as you probably do.

One idea was an aftermarket camera/mirror setup. They seem to work well, but I haven't done it.

There are a few pull through chargers and drive forward style chargers, but they're hard to know which have this accessibility option without just knowing from experience.

Definitely a shortcoming

I’ve seen a few of these suction cup Mirrors that you can put on the tailgate but they don’t have the best reviews yet. Or the ones I saw didn’t. Other then that just looking at putting your own camera in , you also can do the video review mirror camera.

I put a few 4x8. The best option now is to open the Tonneau cover and use rear view mirror. I saw a few DIY projects on this forum to add a periscopic mirror for the tailgate to address this issue. Supercharging issue is valid. I wish they had extension cable accessories for this!

One note - it’s better to put a 2” horizontal support beam (2 by 2 or 2 by 4) right before the tailgate when you are loading multiple 4 by 8s. You don’t want tailgate taking heavy weight. The tailgate is pretty solid but it’s better to not stress it. I haven’t seen any specs on the weight limit for the tailgate.

If you’re loading 4x8 you can stack them to the sky. The tailgate is taking minimum weight as 90% of the load is in the bed. If you’re going 10’ then maybe a different story but I see your point , it doesn’t hurt to throw a 2x4 down for some buffer room

There is a way in the CT screen menu to turn the rear tailgate camera off. there is an AUTO and MANUAL rear camera option.

Also the tailgate weight load IS an issue, as those loading and unloading can load the tailgate - not just the bed.
Just watch and 'on the job' trained forklift driver who sets the pallet on the tailgate...then LOWERS the forks - so now the Pallet & the forklift weight is on your tailgate.

I use my CT for home projects and enjoy watching reactions when opening the bed and loading stuff in the back...it surprises most people how there 'magically' is a cargo bed in the CT.

Open the tonneau cover and the rear-view mirror works.

Also, like every van or panel truck driver has to do, use the side mirrors to see behind you.

Superchargers? Welcome to the issues of towing.

Thank you. I will try to turn off the rear tailgate camera and see if FSD works. I love FSD (s). It keeps me centered on the lanes better than I do. FSD allows me to watch for deer and elk in the ditches, while FSD keeps me perfectly centered. Driving with FSD is more relaxing, as your mind does not constantly have to make adjustments to keep the car centered in your lane. The drive is much more enjoyable and less tiring.

Easy solution. Another camera is needed mounted high 360 or rearview mount, Its something that should not have been missed by Tesla IMO.

Was showing the truck to my wife’s family members and when I opened the tailgate & tonneau, one of them responded something like ‘It’s a truck!?! I thought it was Cyber”truck” in name only. I didn’t know it actually had a bed!’ ?

There is in the CT menu to turn OFF the tailgate camera - or set it to 'Auto' . I do not know if the CT senses the tailgate is open or not...otherwise not sure what 'auto' tailgate camera would do...

Auto just looks at ground. Off just turns off camera. FSD says auto steering unavailable.
