Too many balls in the air still. I think once the 4680 issues get worked out we'll know it and then things will start to move more quickly. Until then, Tesla has little motivation to get anything else finished. Why spend $X billion on a Gigapress if it's going to be idle?
We already know they bought it and shipped it.

I think what Elon is thinking is that he'll let Rivian and Ford fail miserably at scaling production in a timely fashion and then suddenly and apparently effortlessly start pumping out thousands of gleaming Cybertrucks that are even better than what was announced.
From your lips to Elon's ears

I like the title of this thread. Elon actually said this when they released the dual-motor Model S a number of years ago.

That is very generous of you.

But think about Musk. Has he ever let Bezos one up him without some kind of retort?

If we're not seeing a Cybertruck update/ beta truck or some kind of leak to suck up media cycles in the middle of the Rivian launch, its because there is nothing left to leak out right now.

As for scaling. I'd prefer Tesla just kicks Rivian's ass by making an awesome truck. I can't think of a great company that's succeeded by relying on other companies failing.

That is fine. Shouldn't this be a competition.

Shouldn't Ford, GM have to compete by also making awesome vehicles instead of warmed over ICE conversion to EV.

After legacy OEMs had over 20 years head start to make EVs and they always exclaim they have over 100 years experience and we should wait for them, why should we laud Ford, GM and other legacy OEMs when they actually deliver warmed over ICE conversion to EV that can not beat 7 year old Tesla tech.

There are plenty of tasty Cybertruck details that Tesla could reveal now. The chance they have told us all relevant info is zero. The fact that they haven't revealed all is obviously a conscious decision that now is not the best time. Yes, it appears Elon changed his mind. Big deal.

However, I never suggested that Tesla was relying on anyone else failing. The fact that other EV truck makers have no plans to ramp in high volumes in the next two years has nothing to do with when Tesla will ramp Cybertruck. I suggested that Tesla was being quiet about the Cybertruck at this point in time to give the stage fully to those who have made big noises about being first (amongst other brags).

Elon said, Let them be first (if they can), we will release Cybertruck when it's ready and show the world that we mean business, not by talking about it but by delivering an awesome truck in rapidly increasing volumes.

RAPIDLY INCREASING VOLUMES

Seriously. This may end up being the most killer feature of the CT ever. Well, producing a bunch of crap vehicles does no one any good so the #1 feature is a great vehicle. But right after that is the ability to produce at volume. Even if the other EV trucks were able to match the CT on being a great truck, they would still need to be able to produce enough of them to satisfy the market. Right now it seems like only Tesla is putting together the required infrastructure and supply chain to be fully capable of shipping all the trucks the market wants. There will be a bit of a ramp time as they get everything running smoothly but it won't be too long before CT's are getting built at a seriously significant rate. And with the demand quickly buidling for EV trucks Tesla is going to be the only company poised to fulfill that demand in any respectable quantity.

Sure.

Maybe he will as we get closer to shipping.

I think the problem any Cybertruck announcement is it begs the question.

"When will it ship?"

I don't think Tesla has an answer for this question right now.

If I were Tesla, I would keep finalized design and promised dates to myself until I have completed all predecessor tasks. stuff happens and unforeseen delays can always creep in. Don’t give haters fodder, they have enough imagined complaints.

whenever reveal, some will be impressed, agnostic and others complain about reduced imagined features. I will fall in all three categories when evaluating final features. “Where is the panini maker? I was promised a panini maker in the glovebox.”

Assuming it ships in the next year or so, the Cybertruck's "killer feature" is value. Each of the price points is a phenomenal value for what you get.

Doubly so if Air Suspension, Active Dampening, and 4 Wheel Steering are standard... which seems to be the case.

OK, I agree. 3 KILLER FEATURES.

# 1: I had mentioned, "a great vehicle" which in my mind included all the awesome tech like air suspension, active dampening, 4 wheel steering, etc. This item induces LUST. It makes me (and I believe many others) become obsessed with the CT.

#2: Value - Yes all the tech in the world does no one except the uber-rich any good if none of the rest of us can afford it. This induces DESIRE because with a relatively affordable price the CT moves from being a wishful thinking dream machine to have a place in my plans that include actually saving funds to make a purchase.

#3: Availability - I get that it is currently not available but with a strong production rate, the CT will be widely available here in the US. Sorry to the folks outside the US for now. I hope you do get satisfaction shortly. But the availability is the final straw that must exist for me to be able to actually make a CT purchase. So the availability induces actual OWNERSHIP.

Of course, once ownership is achieved, there will be all the life-changing effects that come with it.

Looking at the other EV trucks that are supposed to be coming, I see each of them focusing on 1 or sometimes 2 of the 3 needed areas above. But none of them are addressing all 3. This is going to end up being Tesla's market to own. For the win. To the moon.
