It will allow You to dose off but try picking up your cell phone, does it set off alert? With sun glasses on, I have found I can close my eyes for many miles without any alerts, I don’t feel comfortable while “testing” (supervised) FSD limits (I don’t test unless my wife is in car), makes wonder when “Full” FSD arrives will I be able let go and sleep between super charging stops on long trips. I am not sure.
I have to wear dark prescription IR and UV blocking sunglasses even on cloudy days. FSD can't see my eyeballs when I drive. I too have tested shut eyes. I just need to keep my head moving.
I have definitely had the thought in urban driving that everyone is safer if I turn it over to FSD. And have done so with a feeling of relief. Downtown Vancouver.
Me too. I'm trying to convince dad to let the car do the driving.

If you wear sun glasses and as long as your head is moving every now and then it won’t nag. I fall asleep all the time in my drive home. It’s only 6 miles and all side streets.

I do it pretty regularly. Lean back the seat a bit, wear sunglasses and it will not bother you. Makes my 2 hour plus accounts feel like teleporting.

So what really happens if you do not respond to the warnings and flashings about paying attention? Does it safely pull over to the side of the road and turn off?

I was on my from Houston to Dallas and after i passed Huntsville I dozed off - it was 4am and basically no traffic on I45. When i woke up I was 10 miles from Centerville (about 30 miles). Truck never alerted me. It is weird, if i look at my phone it goes crazy but if i close my eyes with my head straight or turn my head to the left for an extended period I get no alert.

Surprised it took this long for a thread to pop up on falling asleep with FSD.

Also surprised by how some are comfortable with the idea of doing so!

I know for me I wasn’t comfortable with it. Just an 8 hour drive and I was trying to stay awake. Could have only been a couple of head nods and not sleeping but it surprised me that it didn’t warn me. I really have no idea if it was several mins or seconds.
like others have said if you look at your phone it nags so I assumed if I was sleeping it would nag. After reading the experience of others it makes me wonder if I did fall asleep longer than I realized. I know if I did it couldn’t have been more than a couple mins, but it was still surprising that the truck didn’t warn me. Even a few seconds though without FSD and I wouldn’t be alive to write this.

I've nodded a few times actually. "Driving" with FSD can get boring, and sometimes if I'm not super tired, I actually try to take the wheel to wake myself up.

This was back around October/November right when deer season started - I think I saw about 14+ dead deers on my 13 hour drive. I was driving from Atlanta to Maryland overnight (cause charging is cheaper), I actually nodded off around 4:30am to 5:30 ish... what finally woke me up was the truck dodging a deer running from the sidelines onto the road. Had I been half-awake and driving myself, I definitely would've hit it.

I've also nodded off during stoppish and go traffic on the highway. Woke up 4 miles later, perfectly fine. I've done this a couple of times in my ICE vehicle over the years... not for 4 miles, but like 10-20 seconds and it was always a rude / jolting awakening right before I was about to hit someone. Sometimes I'd be driving and slapping myself for like 2 miles straight to stay away. LOL.

So thankful for FSD that I don't think I can ever own anything else besides a Tesla.

This tech really is more life changing than Claude or ChatGPT... sucks (for them) that most are too stubborn to acknowledge it.

First off the road I am driving tonight at four am has no place to pull off the road, just a crappy guard rail and on the other side of the guard rail a bunch of hungry alligators and snakes. So no going to sleep and the truck saving me. What I have been concerned about when drowsy is actually going to sleep, slouching and disengaging FSD! I can’t imagine a time where the roads are filled with self driving vehicles full of narcolepsy dudes dozing off opening their eyes and see a semi truck in their path. I’m going to let Optipussy drive my self driving truck and sing me a lullaby.

Has anyone ever slept during FSD?
I am pretty sure I was dozed in and out (mostly out) for about an hour and a half last night on my way home from a long trip. (End of trip).
Yikes!

in the CT -- not yet for me because i thought the camera will yell at you -- but since you were able to try...........

but in the OLD days of FSD??? hellllll yeah.

There was a weight that was designed to fit the model 3 steering wheel. you could put it on, and it looked like it was designed for the wheel - very stealth. anyway, one time i was tired and had a drink or thrice on a date. at the time fsd only worked on the interstate so if you could get on the interstate you are in a good space… :) so yeah i got my tired ass on the freeway, put the weight on and i passed out until i was going down the 405 just past the Getty ( la peeps know where im talking about). going down that hill made me lean forward and that woke me up. no, i did not mean to doze off -- it just happened. the car changed lanes and all that jazz ( drove about 15 miles). if i had not responded, it would have gotten off the exit, stopped , beeped at me and put on the flashers after some time passed if i didnt acknowledge fsd was over.

one other time i was going to San Diego. there is a section on that stretch that cars just slow to a crawl. i put the weight on, leaned the seat back, and i was out. this was many, many miles (this was back in 2022).

ive also closed my eyes on some little drives here and there -- 🥳
