So far, every time I've seen video of The Cybertruck driving, it's always had the cover in the open position with nothing in the bed. So predominately the CT will be an open bed vehicle, with the possibility of having a closed bed (as needed). That hinged opening design is more of a closed bed design, with doors that can open for access. But not for driving around.
The beauty of the sliding cover is you have the choice.

If you have a hard cover, you are more or less forced to drive around with the cover closed or remove it. If you need an open bed for hauling gravel or objects that stand up tall, you have to remove the cover.

The sliding cover lets you operate in opened or closed freely.

I have to disagree, I see the CT predominantly as a closed bed vehicle with the possibility of having an open bed when needed (i.e. cargo that would otherwise not fit with the bed closed). Primary reason being range but also keeping cargo covered from weather and from being stolen.

Folks, I had this 63 Ranchero with a tonneau cover for 15 years. Yes, with those covers you have to remove it to haul a refridgerator (which I've done). But predominately, you drive with it closed.
With the roll-top cover design and the angled sides of the bed, the Cybertruck is a very different design.
Most of the time while driving my Ranchero there wasn't anything in the bed, but my cover was closed because there wasn't any option to drive with it open (other than remove it). I actually enjoyed driving it without the top on at times, but always ended up putting it back on so I could have me stuff in the back going to the beach and not worry about it.
I can't see driving around with the CT cover up as something I would enjoy. My favorite configuration would be driving around with the cover put away and the back window down with my dog Sam hanging out in the back. With the cover up, it will be like driving a box truck with no visibility out the back.
I really love the design of the roll-top.

One of the biggest downsides to the Cybertruck designs is visibility out the back window and rear view mirror is always going to be complete crap. The vault being open or closed isn't going to have a ton of impact on this since you are sitting so low relative to the tailgate. It will let a little light in and that's about it.

It won't be quite as bad as driving a box truck because you have the big, expansive rear roof panel letting tons of light in from behind you. I do think it will be nice driving with the vault open. When I'm not worried about range or theft, that'll probably be my default setup too.

When commuting long distance, I bet you close the cover If load does not prevent closing. When you roll up to a beach, maybe open while admiring… the waves…

In the Jay Leno drive it was closed, not that it means anything per se, but despite that it had plenty of light coming in thanks to the "greenhouse".

The Cybertruck has a display screen in lieu of a rear-view mirror.

I think manufacturing a rattle free tonneau cover with slats will be a big enough engineering challenge. I don't see a mid gate happening but I hope I am wrong. That feature would be AWESOME.
