For those of us with solar (non-Tesla) and no powerwall, how do we take advantage of Powershare?

Unfortunately I have a wonky setup where our original 6 kWh SunPower system was installed in 2011. In 2018 we installed a new roof and added a parallel 4 kWh system, this time LG panels with solaredge microinverters. No battery backup yet.

So with the Cyberbeast ordered I’m wondering what my options are to actually use powershare. Do i need to install a powerwall? Is there anywhere to go to get solid info yet?

I would use Reliance Controls generator transfer switch to hook up with the main service panel as detailed in the YouTube video below. This is a manual backup option, not an automatic setup with a Tesla gateway which would cost up to $6K to install by an licensed electrician.

Instead of using the old model transfer switch kit 30310CRK as shown in the video, I would use a more modern version model #310CRK Pro/Tran2. Wiring method would be very much the same.

I think you will need the tesla gateway. It’s very likely the wall connector will not allow you to manually switch to backfeed mode if it senses no utility power. The gateway will talk to the connector snd say it’s ok to backfeed, I shut off the main.
The absolute simplest and cheapest way would be to make a cable that plugged in to the bed of the truck 240v outlet and a male connector that plugged into your dryer or 240 outlet in your garage. You would need to manually shut off the main breaker on your panel first. The truck would then back feed your house through that connection. If you drew more than the outlet could handle the breaker would protect the circuit. You would need to unplug prior to turning your main breaker back on at the house. You would also be very much at risk of shocking yourself with the male connector ends if your connect/disconnect sequencing was off.

There’s not enough detail here for me to provide insight. Can you dm me a picture of the wall surrounding your meter (10-12’ either side should suffice) a picture of your main breaker panel and one close enough to read the labels on the main breaker?

This would be for Powershare mobile and not universal wall connector.

But I am looking into a setup like this because it'd be cheaper.

If Tesla restricts V2H to Tesla charger handshake, then V2H wouldn't be possible without the powershare setup.

The V2H is back feeding through the charger cable to the Tesla EVSE, which would handle the handshake. So the 11.5 kW back feeding through the charge cable might need a powershare setup.

V2L is just 120 and 240 receptacles in bed and 120 in the cab. If you wanted to connect the 240 V 40 A that would get you 9.6 kW which you could use many ways.

I agree. I strongly suspect that the universal wall charger from Tesla will exclusively work with their branded gateway and nothing else for the foreseeable future. This removes a ton of liability and negative press. Also, it leads you to buy into their ecosystem.

Tesla has been extraordinary careful with safety issues and this one will be no different.

Most houses wouldn’t use more than 9.6 kW at any given time.

Well yes, presumably during an emergency no one is doing dishwashing, clothes washing/drying, hot tubbing, or cooking on an oven. And no hot showers (for those who have electric water heater like us).

In a summer blackout I just need about 100 w of lights, ~700w fridge and 3.8kW of AC.

One good thing about this V2H trend is that people will have to learn more about electricity or spend a ton of money separating an emergency panel.

I sure wish I could put a multimeter on the NEMA 14-50 in the truck bed...Are there just two hots for 240v or is there a neutral connection that would measure 120v between each leg? If so, then the male plug to male plug idea would work just fine at home....But until someone measures the truck output, I don't know what to think...
