If Ford EVs are priced at parity to Ford ICE, Ford will probably lose a lot of money even with Next-Gen T3 full-size pickup.

At an investor conference, Farley said that, for many automakers, EVs will remain more costly than their internal combustion engine counterparts until the second and third generation models go into production later in this decade.

And what is it you think that means, exactly?

Ford does not operate its business, nor account for OpEx, in the same manner as Tesla.

There’s this ongoing quip around here regarding Tesla’s gross margins, seemingly unaware why it’s called “gross.”

I’ll mix and match some historical margin data for Ford and Tesla, you guess which is which, and what it all means - though also remember:

• Ford’s margins are wholesale, while Tesla’s are retail

•
Ford is ~8-10 years behind it’s BEV manufacturing/volume curve compared to Tesla

At least Farley is being honest and upfront, unlike Mary Barra. Tesla is going to be able to continue making vehicles for less due to volume efficiencies and manufacturing innovations. Anyone who can't keep up is going to be struggling financially.

Over the next decade you will see EV's on a downward cost curve while ICE vehicles become more expensive due to efficiencies that fall with volume and a lack of real innovation in the ICE manufacturing space. Suppliers will be going out of business making it more difficult for legacy automakers to source components at the low prices they are accustomed to.
