I suppose a bi-directional motor with some type of controller/sensor setup would be possible when there is no need for linkage between two separate blades.
However, a linkage does allow the reversal to happen quite simply and reliably, even with a single blade.
The fact that it's being used on a flat piece of glass changes a lot of things. It might turn out the the BAW is a lot quieter than other wipers because the hold-down force can be spread very evenly across the entire contact surface. You can have just-barely-enough hold-down force, no need to compensate for curved glass by using too strong a spring.

What I'm worried about is...
During the heaviest rain, that thing will have to be moving at 1000MPH. And it's heavy.

Assuming that the highest wiper speed is one full sweep (and back) per second, covering 4 linear feet each direction, the speed works out to around 5 MPH.

When it's flying one direction, then slams to a stop and moves back in the opposite direction, the gears will push themselves out of alignment.

That's not how wipers work. The motor/gears turn in only 1 direction. Oscillation is provided by the linkage armatures.

There are much larger wipers on buses and semi trucks. I have no worries about the BAW.

What does BAW stand for? Bad-ass wiper?

I hope the final version will have a cove for the wiper to be safe in. Replacements won't be cheap.

I’m just going by what is not happening with the Cybertruck that was supposed to happen. Laser wipers. No rear view mirrors, the size is smaller, but said it would not be, not an exoskeleton but now it’s a frame. I reserved two tri motors but now they cancelled dual motors. Elon says shit and promises shit that he changes later. I believe it is going to be a boat anchor off roading in the mud. And suck the life out of the batteries too quick. I can go on or you could do some research on your own. Don’t be sad.
