I am concerned about solar gain. I am not sure what would be worse, stainless steel with .5" of insulation or insulated/tinted glass. I am so excited to be able to sit in my car in comfort in the summer with the AC on without my engine idling and to auto cool my car 2-3 minutes before I get in. I am assuming Teslas already do that with an app or something.
You can turn on climate control from the app 10 minutes before you get in, or schedule your departure on the console so it starts up in advance.

The roof on my Model Y is quite dark, I'm sure it lets in more heat than a metal roof with a liner, but its not as bad as a clear roof would be. Usually the cabin cools off quickly on a hot summer day.

Hey Crissa, Ever had issue with riding in and out of shade on a motorcycle?
I've never noticed a problem, and I ride with sunglasses. But... my Harley is pretty slow, lots of time for the eyes to adjust! :ROFLMAO:

Hey Crissa, Ever had issue with riding in and out of shade on a motorcycle? I never thought about it. Seems like a non-issue to me.
I guess if people think it's a problem, someone will come up with a solution to make money like this.

Lived Westchester County. Never so happy then that my truck had no sunroof. Tree shade light flash was intense. Hardest daytime driving encountered ever.

Lived in San Diego. Anzo-Borrego on a good day approaches 104F daytime. Even a draw closure helps not much as heat bulds between the glass and closure. Heat damage accrues from keeping the sunroof closure shut. Either gaskets brittle or closure deteriorates.

Originally, a glassroof opening was marketed as “Moonroof”. That remains its most enjoyable use for a sunroof; opening it up to the stars! BUT I’m a guy whose companions overwhelmingly favor top down. A sunroof is the second best option even when you have a retractable hardtop. It keeps passengers happy.

Do you know if the computer minimizes the energy consumption to cool or heat your car? For example if you are only going to be gone for 10 minutes it might maintain close to set point and go to set point just before you arrive. Or if you are going to be gone for 2 hours it might shut off and let the car go to ambient temp plus gain and then run the AC hard to be at temperature when you arrive?

Also I thought I heard it does the initial cooling with fans and vent only. Is that the case?

The car wouldn't know how long you are going to stay so I'm not sure how it would do that.

If you know you are going to be right back, you can pop open the climate control window and set the climate control to "On" and it will keep running while you are away.

You can also check the temperature, vent the windows, turn on climate control, and set the temperature from the app on your phone. Last time we went out to eat it was pretty hot outside and our car was parked in partial sun so after we ordered I opened up the Tesla app and put climate control on 80 degrees. When we got into car it was quite tolerable and I set it back to 70 where I leave it most of the time.

Most important, if the inside temperature is over 105 degrees, a Tesla turns on the fans and possibly the AC (there is a setting) to keep the temperature below 105 degrees. It does this automatically.

When you first start the car, the climate comes on with super high fans. I'm not sure if that's outside air or not. It is usually cooler than outside air so maybe it makes a determination. I don't know.

Thanks for the insight. I assumed you would have to tell the car/app your return time in order to calculation the most efficient energy expenditure during your absence.

Tesla has a pretty extensive API for extending the car/ truck with smartphone's apps. I could see writing an app for this where your climate control automatically comes on 15 minutes before an appointment.

It wouldn't surprise me if Tesla added this feature in an update. You can already sync your calendar with the car and if you have locations in your calendar they pop up in the nav system. Starting climate control before an appointment at a distant location makes a ton of sense.

There are a lot of tinting options out there that help reflect heat. 3M makes a lot. I am considering going with a reflective film as long as it doesn’t void the warrantee of the glass.

Off topic, I am also very likely going to do a high performance film in the truck bed to protect the stainless. If I have spare cash I might consider doing a protective film coating on the whole truck. Again 3M make some amazing films.

I find an glass roof to be distracting while driving. I always drive with the shade closed under a sunroof as changing sunlight between the trees can create an undesired strobe effect.
I completely agree with you. I dislike the huge front windshield in our Model X for those very reasons. My Model S has a "normal" windshield and it's great. I almost never look up to see through the glass roof either. I'd definitely vote for solar panels on the Cybertruck roof in place of the glass.

Lets not forget that the battery temperature is maintained so it will never get too hot in the cabin. On hot days our car can be uncomfortable when we first get in as we have turned off climate control when the vehicle isn't in use, but the batteries will always be kept a safe temperature. The climate control system is prettty good so even without timed cooling it becomes comfortable quickly. I have never noticed any particular heat coming from the roof.

My wife’s current car has a moon roof and it’s always closed because the light and heat bothers her.

We purposely picked a hot sunny day to test drive a Model Y so that we could see if it was an issue.

After the test drive and on our way home, we both realized we had forgotten to look up and see if it was going to be an issue.

Apparently not.
