Help. Why not the Rivian?

The issue with threads such as these. Some want to be super serious. Others are saying exactly what they think at the moment. Maybe more blunt, or encompassing the entire product that Rivian offers in one sentence.

For one I don't like Rivian's business practices.

Just curious, what is your issue with RJ and what business practices?

Then you probably should wait for the Toyota truck. After all Toyota has promised all sorts of things.

That they won't be able to deliver.

As to charge once a week. Let's wait till Apple can make it once a week.

But in reality, I ONLY stop and charge on long trips. For many it's like charging only once a year. In the evening, I close the garage door and insert something in the car. Not really an imposition.

I’m not going to wait, I’ll buy the Cybertruck exactly as it is today, this is just wish list stuff.

And yeah, we’ve had a Model X for over a year now and have only been to Superchargers twice. We top it off in the driveway every other night. But we also don’t use it for vacations/camping. We’ll see how the 2024 CT AWD works, especially with the range extender

Theft of intellectual property was the lawsuit for people that left in mass. I have met RJ a couple times at social functions in Michigan. Less then stellar.

Kind of a sh$% move. Evidently he didn't get much as they can barely make production. Being tossed off the Tesla ship very rarely leads to EV success. Almost like the assistant coaches of Bill Belicheck.

Remember in recent interviews on Munro live Elon mentioned bet the company type of moves. Now Tesla is able to complete those moves without having to bet the company. Basically they could do whatever within reason to make a product they wanted. Maybe for the first time.

Not one OEM manufacturer in my mind today can think that big. Build out a production line that in the end will make Jim Farley awe. Then the bean counters come in. Not at Tesla, well maybe a little less.

So that's why not Rivian. They are still bet the company. I can't be in that camp when the other camp is so compelling from an engineering/design standpoint. Tesla can do what they want.

GM built the E-Hummer. Very low volume vehicle with lots of costs in development. So it has been done. I personally think they did it as a halo vehicle and it was kinda dumb.

I'm assuming that you must be towing on your vacations and camping, because my itsy-bitsy Model Y is an awesome road trip.

There's a big difference between Open Source and stealing it. Open Source does NOT mean that it is free of use in any way that someone wants to us it.

And not everything is considered to be Open Source at Tesla. I'm sure that there are a LOT of sensitive pieces of information.

Rivian R1S owner - generally love the vehicle two things I think are much superior in the Tesla: Autopilot / FSD and Seat Comfort (assuming CT is similar to other Teslas, but I find the Rivian seats uncomfortable in longer drives and putting pressure on the nerve in my leg). The latter is probably a very personal thing. The former is is big deal to me but may not be to you. I use FSD all the time. Also charging sucks because CCS but the SC network adapter is coming soon and being provided at no charge.

On pretty much every other dimension, I have found the Rivian better than my Teslas. Oh, and re the stadium lights, I appreciate that some people do not like them, but I have gotten many unsolicited compliments on them in particular and on the vehicle in general. Now that I have cancelled my CT, I am planning to either go through with the Silverado EV or pick up the R1T Dual Motor.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for taking time to share your thoughts. All super helpful.

We’ve actually also got a 2018 F150 Raptor, and it’s a great road tripper. We drove cross country from CT to CA in 44 hours (drive time) during Covid and it really wasn’t bad at all. Rear seats are huge, and I can confirm, range on a full tank will outlast anyone’s ability to sit in one place. (Our MY lives there but is actually coming back to CT soon)

CT has me captivated. But so does Rivian. Would really like a test drive of both. That seems unlikely prior to having to make a decision.

FSD? The Rivian will make turns for you? Does it stop at traffic lights?

Or is it more like ADAS?

As big skiers, we drive to Vermont most weekends all winter. 180 miles each way. Temps can can be low, 5 degrees not uncommon, and 10 below some mornings is not uncommon. And a lot of weekends, we are plunging far deeper to remote parts of Vermont for ski races. Elevation change from about 500 ft to 2,200 for most trips.

We’ve got a garage and home charger at both ends of trip.

I'm confused. Neither the Rivian or the Cybertruck would be a good choice for a 360-mile round trip ski weekend if you don't have reliable charging where you stay or on the hill.

In a decade there will chargers everywhere although congestion might be a problem during peak periods. I use my Model 3 Performance and it's the best ski car I've ever driven. But you will need a charging solution at or near the ski hill to make a 360-mile round-trip practical. I would say this even if Tesla had alreadly released a 500-mile EPA rated Cybertruck. As electrification progresses, you will see the solution is more ubiquitous Level 2 charging stations- in parking lots, not huge batteries.
