A timely post by Musk today.

Folks talking about huge price increases need to figure out how that impacts affordability. If you don’t take that into account, your words are meaningless. Tesla is trying to sell tens of millions of trucks in the next ~15 years.

Just because you and your friends can plop down $90k on a truck doesn’t mean Tesla can find 500k other truck buyers that can.

The goal of CT pricing should be to make every new truck buyer seriously consider the CT option, and this would mean a competitive model for the low-priced fleet truck purchasers - you know, the plain jane "white work truck," as well as the premium truck buyers. It will be interesting to see how, and if, Musk achieves this.

The Model T of electric trucks?

YOU ARE VERY MUCH ON MARK with this!! In more ways than one. When the first model TT was made there were OTHER trucks. But ford ,using better manufacturing techniques ( as Tesla is ), Beat the pants off of other MFR's because he could make the, cheaper AND faster.
Uncle Muskie is doing that all over again!

I'll pay for the asked price for a 500mile CT, but of the two I have ordered, the 2nd could be a "city work truck" that would have zero need for more than 200 miles range. Okay, that's the 80% number so it would be more like 250, but you get the point.

I'll wager there is 3-5x the demand for such a low end CT than the premium version. And one interesting fact - from the outside you won't be able to tell them apart. Well except for some tiny emblem that blurts out "2 motor" or "3 motor" or such.

And once that production line starts for real, there will be a real panic in the squirrel populations because if they stay on the ground, they're flat splats, and if they jump, they bounce off those angles on those CTs. And that bounce is gonna launch them straight to Mars. Yum yum. Premium solar-roasted, sustainable squirrel...

That’s the aim but it’s going to take a few years to spool up to mass production and actually supply the demand to the point of a plain white work truck.

True, but suppose from the very start, a CT was offered for sale that directly competed with the low-end Ford, Chev, and Ram models. It wouldn't have to be a large number produced - just enough to excite the demand.

That takes us round-robin back to the $39k Cybertruck.

Even if it's just a few, it cements the image that Tesla can make them at that price and punched the nay-sayers in the genitals.

Exactly.

What would happen to market for medium priced ICE pickup trucks.

Ford, GM, Stellantis, Toyota would have to accelerate change to BEVs because their ICE cash cow would be dead dead dead.

No more wasting money playing with hydrogen combustion engines.
No more wasting money on new petrol ICE engines designs.
No more compliance cars made in low volumes.
No more 50 different models before they even make 6 good compelling models at high volume.

In the year 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived in the “New World” with 600 men, and upon arrival, made history by scuttling/sinking his own ships., This sent a clear message to his men. There is no turning back! Two years later, he succeeded in his complete conquest of the Aztec empire.

Franz was very enamoured with the fact the only branding was “TESLA” on the steering wheel centre and “Cybertruck” on the front door sills. The aftermarket will supply stickers, emblems, embossing and laser etching.

The final appearance of automotive fleets after, say hypothetically, a cheap battery makes 25,000$ Cybertrucks dominant?

It would not surprise me if ICE provided strong competition simply by retaining factories and production in non-union states.

But there may be other unanticipated factors. How about a cessation of requirements for clean aerodynamic profiles for Etrucks or evehicles in general? Then we could get some nice shapes in cars like in the past instead of the current 'everything looks like an egg or a squashed egg'. That's the result of regulations.

That should be possible since electric cars are clean, zero emission by fiat, and can/shall/will ignore those nasty dirty coal electricity producers riiiiiiiggggghhhhhttttt?

Just follow the logic, and the CT could possibly be just the first of a great many interesting-looking vehicles.

Hasn't Elon been saying recently the roads are about to become very different looking?
