It might vary by state law, in Washington they only wanted to make sure I was insured, not necessarily with actual Cybertruck insurance. That's because Washington requires insurance companies to give a grace period to new car buyers that covers the new car. This fixes the problem when people are so excited to take delivery of a new vehicle they forget to insure it before making the deal and driving it home.

In TX you are required to have a policy on the VIN you are buying. Not sure about your state. ?‍

Ask via the tesla app in the text chat button at the top right, they respond pretty quick.

I'm my case, they wanted the CT VIN, but all the insurance in CA are doing this dumb "waiting period" before your insurance goes into effect. Not sure what that's about...

5/2 delivery in VA. The initial "insurance document" just needed to be current auto insurance. Towards the end, it stated needing to have insurance coverage on actual CT VIN, effective by delivery date. I went back to my "insurance upload" section and replaced it with new CT insurance.

In GA my current insurance insures me on new vehicle purchases. I had tried to get a policy added before I took delivery and they had never heard of doing so and suggested I wait until I took delivery. I uploaded my current insurance card.

UnlessTexas changed it recently, my last 2 new vehicle purchases 2019 f150, 2022 Sienna did not require policy on vin. Just my insurance card for the vehicles I already owned.

Texas does not allow direct sales. The workaround requires the vehicle to be insured before delivery so that Tesla can request registration on your behalf.
